antimatter · 25/01/2015 21:24

me too!

Nanasueathome · 25/01/2015 21:26

My younger son bought this book years ago, read it, then gave it to me to read
It took me ages and i found it compelling but really hard going at times
If you start now then you may actually finish it by 28th March

mrscumberbatch · 25/01/2015 21:27

I've tried to read this a couple of times but always hit a roadblock and end up on something else.

Will give it another go.

Figster · 25/01/2015 21:30

I read it years ago always hoped for a tv/movie adaptation and now have forgotten most of it so will be like I've never read it! Do recall it was hard work but really enjoyed it In the end

whippetwoman · 25/01/2015 21:37

Hurrah. Signing in too for a mega read Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2015 21:42

I'm in.

ClashCityRocker · 25/01/2015 21:45

Signing in...trying to work out how long it will take me to read though Confused

What's a similar sized book?

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 21:52

It is long and magnificent. I savoured every page of it and grieved when it ended. This will be a good excuse to read it again Smile

Make sure you read the footnotes. Much of the story is in there.

DuchessofMalfi · 25/01/2015 21:53

The Bible, Clash - that's why we're giving ourselves a really long time to read it :o

Southeastdweller · 25/01/2015 21:54

The only other really long book I know is The Goldfinch, which is almost 900 pages, 140 pages shorter than JS & M.N.

antimatter · 25/01/2015 21:55

ClashCityRocker -
similar - The Goldfinch,
slightly shorter The Luminaries
even longer are 1Q84 and The Crimson Petal and the White

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2015 21:56

'This Thing of Darkness' 768 pages

'The Stand' 1348 pages

Two of my favourites. :)

antimatter · 25/01/2015 21:56

I was looking at how long are books on Audible - that may not correspond to the actual pages though

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 21:57

"The Bible" Grin

CoteDAzur · 25/01/2015 21:58

Remus - I didn't realise The Stand was that long. It doesn't feel like it.

Sootgremlin · 25/01/2015 21:58

Tentatively in. I don't get a lot of reading time so hesitant. Forgot about the bloody footnotes Grin

Looked up when it was published - 2004 - I have the hardback so must have been 10 years ago I attempted it last Shock

I did have a lot on then.

High time for another go I guess Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 25/01/2015 21:58

Was being flippant - my paperback copy is 1006 pages long. Really looking forward to this.

ScrambledSmegs · 25/01/2015 21:58

I loved this book and read it in about 2 days flat. Am surprised that some parts were considered hard going. Although I found The Hundred Year Old Man Who Climbed Out Of A Window And Disappeared really hard work and I gave up, so who am I to be surprised Grin

Figster, you may be interested in this

ClashCityRocker · 25/01/2015 21:58

Oh that's not too long then! So game of thrones sort of length?

I do like a good long book, provided I manage to 'immerse' myself in it. My last few books have been quite short as I didn't want anything overinvolving due to work pressures.

Have downloaded onto kindle, will start after the tax deadline!

CatsClaus · 25/01/2015 21:58

I have carted this book from one end of the country to the next and still not read it.

This is the only book that I have more or less given up on

It did cross my mind to go back to it when I heard about the tv adaptation, but meh.

antimatter · 25/01/2015 22:00

1Q84 - 812
The Luminaries - 849
The Crimson Petal and the White - 922

ClashCityRocker · 25/01/2015 22:00

remus the stand is one of my favourites too apart from the bloody ending

If it's a good book, the length shouldn't matter, I think.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/01/2015 22:02

According to Amazon, Cote - I haven't checked my copy. It was initally published in a slightly shortened version then his uber-original-version released later.
