Southeastdweller · 31/12/2014 20:28

Thread one of the 50 Book Challenge.

The idea is to read 50 books (or more!) in 2015.

Who's in for this year?

OP posts:
duckwalk · 31/12/2014 21:33

Can I join? Love reading and fairly new to MN, so was way too late to join 2014's! Does the book have to be started in 2015? I started a book yesterday but have only read 8% (kindle).

Schoolchauffeur · 31/12/2014 21:35

I fell off the wagon last year, but definitely up for the challenge this year! Starting with "One Fine Day in the middle of the night" by Christopher Brookmyre.

thelittlebooktroll · 31/12/2014 21:35

I am joining. Lurked on the 2014 thread and loved all the great recommendations. I probably read 25 books or so a year only but would like to read more. Mainly read on my commute to work. Last book I read was A signature of all things by Elisabeth Gilbert which took me 3 weeks.

Currently at home recovering from an op so will be reading lots in the coming weeks hopefully!

FaithLoveandGrace · 31/12/2014 21:40

Can I join you please. Would love to read more instead of messing around on Facebook / mumsnet not really achieving anything. Have just started reading Paulo Coehlo's The Valkyries. It's not really fiction but brilliant nonetheless :)

bella4024 · 31/12/2014 21:42

I lurked last year, but would love to join in properly this year! I read 65 books last year which isn't as many as I normally manage so hoping to improve this year!

Slidingintoindifference · 31/12/2014 21:45

Another newbie - hadn't yet discovered Mumsnet last year! Used to be a voracious reader, but now spend far too much time browsing online instead. Want to get back into the book habit, so this will be great. Have just started The Secret Keeper by Kate Morton on kindle, so this is a brilliant push for me to get on with reading it and stop procrastinating.

Morrigu · 31/12/2014 21:47

Oh I'll join. Started off really well last year until my kindle broke and reading fell by the wayside for Netflix.

Beginning with Do Androids dream of electric sheep by Philip K Dick as I'm in a dystopian genre mood atm and read four similar books in the last week.

MegBusset · 31/12/2014 21:47

I'm in :) need some recommendations though! Remus what exploration books have you got lined up? I might do a lot of rereading this year.

MyIronLung · 31/12/2014 21:48

I'm in! I'm always reading so will be interested to see how many I get through (and get some ideas for new books to read Grin)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 21:50

'Cold' by Ranulph Fiennes is first on the list, and then one about Everest by Chris Bonington.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 21:51

Morrigu - I loved, 'Do Androids.'

MyIronLung · 31/12/2014 21:51

faith I loved The Valkyries.

I've just finished The Book Thief and it blew me away. I'm a bit gutted that I can't count it as part of my 2015 count!

cruikshank · 31/12/2014 21:52

Morrigu, what dystopian books would you recommend? I really love Oryx and Crake, Never Let Me Go and The Handmaid's Tale (which I thought was terrifying). Have thought about reading The Road but have heard that it is really really bleak. Have you read it? It sounds like a bit of a slog, but is it worth it?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 21:54

'The Road' is an easy enough read, with only one really awful scene. I was disappointed by it, tbh. Far prefer, 'The Stand.'

StockingFullOfCoal · 31/12/2014 21:55

Oooo me!

My Dads bringing me Terry Brooks Shannara books at the weekend, he's been harping on at me for months so thats where I'm starting.

Rugbylovingmum · 31/12/2014 21:57

I'm in! I've barely had time to pick up a book since DD2 arrived but I'm determined to read more than assignments and exam papers this year. I have ordered a small pile of books from amazon - The Rosie Project, Broadchurch, I Am Pilgrim, The Humans, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Bad Pharma, The Shock of the Fall and the first Simon Serrailler book. After reading Charlotte's Web to my youngest cousin, I've also picked up a few books from my childhood to re-read. I can't wait to get started. Now I just have to decide which one to read first.

I'm going to start with the Raymond E Feist books, starting with Magician. There's about 10 zillion of them so they should keep me going for a bit.

cruikshank · 31/12/2014 22:03

RemusLupins, thanks for that. If it's an easy read, I might give it a go. I liked The Stand as well - really liked it, in fact. It could do with a lot of editing, but it was very well written.

I also loved Cloud Atlas, while we're talking (or at least I'm talking) dystopia - I know there was a lot more to it than that, but the Slusha's Crossing bit was the central part of it, I think.

MyIronLung · 31/12/2014 22:04

Would anyone on this thread be interested in doing a book swap. We could swap read books between us to maximise the variety and number of books available to read.
Would only work with actual books that we own though (I read a combination of ebooks, books from bookshops/charity shops and library books)

Just an idea Smile

Slidingintoindifference · 31/12/2014 22:06

Does re-reading old favourites count towards the total - when I used to have my serious reading habit, I always had a old faithful going at the same time as a new read. So I had something to fall back on as a bit of light-relief (although often the old faithful was anything but light in terms of tone and content iyswim), if I found the new book heavy going.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2014 22:08

Yes to re-reading.

Jingleybells · 31/12/2014 22:12

I am signing in. Would love to read more in 2015. Kicking off with Skippy Dies

Jingleybells · 31/12/2014 22:15

Rugbylovingmum - Can recommend The Rosie Project & Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Slidingintoindifference · 31/12/2014 22:20

Excellent we can re-read, will have fun deciding which one first.
