The Dirty Bits For Girls

'One day someone came back from half-term with Delta of Venus, by Anais Nin...Well. Well. The book briskly did the rounds, getting tattier and tattier with each reading. Mouths dropped open in shock. Eyes popped with disbelief. Did people really...Did men really want to ...?' Edited and introduced by India Knight, The Dirty Bits - for girls is an unmissable collection. From zipless action in Fear of Flying to jolly romps with Jilly Cooper; from transgressions with a priest in The Thorn Birds to mischief with Mellors; from a gentle first encounter with 'Ralph' in Forever to anything and everything but gentle in The Story of O. Even Keats, Chaucer and Shakespeare are up for no good, to say nothing of Prince Abdullah and that unspeakable thing with a goldfish in Lace. These are the stories that taught us about sex, volumes pilfered from our parents' bookshelves, books passed girl to girl, hidden in desks, whispered and wondered about.'

At our school it was all about Ralph...

What a fabulous idea!
I think I might get this for dh - was trying to explain to him about the goldfish recently.
(Not, I might add, in order to get him to do it.)

EnidVorhees · 11/10/2006 11:34

hooray

Lace was 'our' one at school

nappiesLaGore · 11/10/2006 11:34

lol. the name Ralph will onlyever mena penis to me. and a laughable childish falccid one at that (rather than the rampant quivering sort - just for clarity)

cupsnakes · 11/10/2006 11:34

yes, I shall have to get it too.

cupsnakes · 11/10/2006 11:35

do you remember Ralph and the aftershave incident?

Bugsy2 · 11/10/2006 11:57

I remember listening on the phone while a friend read the naughty bits of Judith Kranz books!!! I had no idea what most of it was about, but we read bits of those books until the pages fell out.

sandyballs · 11/10/2006 12:01

I remember the saucy bits in the James Herbert books - I used to go the library to study them

cupsnakes · 11/10/2006 17:26

what did James Herbert write?

NOMurDErousPLUME · 11/10/2006 17:28

'Are You There God ? It's Me, Margaret' was a fave too.

NOMurDErousPLUME · 11/10/2006 17:28

Judy Blume was Queen of rudey books

northerner · 11/10/2006 17:29

OMG this is a blst from teh past. I remeber reading a book at school and there was a boy in it who called his penis Ralph.

What book is it?

nailpolish · 11/10/2006 17:30

ROFL @ nappies galore

NOMurDErousPLUME · 11/10/2006 17:30

Ralph was from another Judy Blume, wasn't he ?

KathyMCMLXXII · 11/10/2006 17:34

I think the one with Ralph was 'Forever' by Judy Blume.
'Are you there God, it's me Margaret' had 'I must, I must, I must increase my bust!'

NOMurDErousPLUME · 11/10/2006 17:35

It was deffo Forever, it was sooooooooooo rude. Or at last it was when I was 10

cupsnakes · 11/10/2006 17:39

Forever did seem outrageously rude.
all I really remember is his foolishness in putting aftershave on his balls (although I can't imagine it stung that much)
and she sewed patchwork mushrooms onto her jeans - wtf?

I have a horrible vision of my daughters stumbling across this book in ten years' time! It'll be lurking somewhere at the bottom of a tea chest. This will provide them with unprecedented popularity among their peers.

Big fan of India's, and a big fan of dirty books... so a note to Santa is certainly in order.

foxtrottingtotransylvania · 11/10/2006 17:47

teehee, think i will suggest this for my RL book group which comprises 85% OAPs

sarahalloween · 11/10/2006 17:51

I tried to get my Dad to buy me Forever from a children/young person's bookshop but the owner said to him " This is semi pornagraphic you know" I'd already read it as a girl in my class won it in a Just Seventeen competition!

cupsnakes · 11/10/2006 17:53

my mum wouldn't buy it for me because the girl on it goes on the pill and she was trying to promote condoms in her AIDS awareness heyday.

As soon as I saw Ralph typed there I thought of the Judy Blume book

MissyBabee · 12/10/2006 13:57

hi there - scrolling messages and ralph/forever brought it all back to me too! never read the book, just read and re-read the 'interesting' bits courtesy of my best friend at the time.

Kathy, what was that book with the goldfish as i remember that being passed around too, no idea what the book was called!

am tempted to get the book you mention cupsnakes but what would DH think??

CheesyFeetcomingtoGETyou · 12/10/2006 14:07

Someone lent me "Forever" by Judy Bloom when I was about 12 saying that I should read it because it made her fanny tingle

NotQuiteCockney · 12/10/2006 14:16

Where are all the MN folk who are opposed to porn? I'd settle for dumbfluff ...

KathyMCMLXXII · 12/10/2006 18:07

Missybabee, it was 'Lace' by Shirley Conran.
