Books for my Dad

I'm looking for a few recommendations for my Dad (65) he's having a major op soon and will be not hugely mobile for a good bit. He's not a great reader but will need something to entertain him. He's even less of a TV watcher

I've lent him books over the years and he's enjoyed Child 44, the Good German, Girl with a Dragon Tattoo trilogy (a bit long), Band of Brothers, not so much Lee Childs books. I think he probably would have liked the Goldfinch, if it had have been a lot more succinct. I'm thinking more novels than biographies. Books that aren't too long, flowery, or navel gazery and nothing to do with cancer. Anything I've read this year just doesn't seem to be lending itself to what he might like.

My dad, who is 84, read and enjoyed One Night in Winter by Simon Sebag Montefiore. He enjoys a gripping story with lots of adventure and intrigue that keeps up the pace. I've read it too and thought it was a really enjoyable story.

Bill Bryson - non fiction/ gentle humour
I am Pilgrim - Terry Hayes best thriller of the year
The Wallander books by Henning Mankell- excellent Scandi Crime
Bernard Cornwell - popular historical fiction. (Penisular war /vikings and medieval)

The Harry Hole books by Jo Nesbo?

My Dad, who is not much of a reader really enjoyed the Agent Zigzag and Operation Mincemeat stories by Ben Macintyre (I think) Amazing war based stories about real spies and really unlikely but true goings on!

Finbar's suggestions are spot on, as is I Am Pilgrim.

Thank you , you are all stars. I'm running around like a blue arsed fly at the minute and trying to sort out books just seemed to be the thing I fixated on. I'm aware that that's because I don't actually want to think of him as being ill! Thanks again and I might snaffle a few for myself

Dad loves both - to read and watch news on television. For books, he always reads Reader's Digest and James Clark Maxwell books. He has also Let’s Explore Diabetes with Owls, The Son, Mortality on his bookshelf, and some other happiness, health and motivational books

James Patterson series about the detective Alex Cross are good.Along came a Spider

Or Harlan Coben are good stand alone novels.
