Any Dorothy Dunnett fans out there?

I've just finished the first in the Niccolo series, Niccolo Rising. It was lent to me by a friend who is a card carrying Dorothy fan and has read all her books lots of times!

I'm now hooked myself. It's led me to research the relevant parts of European medieval history ie the Italian Wars, the Alum Cartel, the Medicis..... So fascinating!

I'm a history enthusiast but usually stick to early Medieval English monarchs - sort if William the Conqueror to Edward IV ish. I'm so excited about having a whole new sphere to read up on. I'm no expert, just an interested and avid (albeit slow) reader.

So, anyone else out there or just me?

Not just you! Sorry, don't visit this board very often or I'd have replied earlier.

My mum is a massive DD fan, and I've borrowed the Francis Crawford books from her a couple of times and loved them - I can thoroughly recommend them. Scotland (and Europe) when Mary Queen of Scots is young.

I have to say I didn't get on so well with the Niccolo books - I've read the first two or three, a long time ago, but didn't fancy warm to Niccolo the same way. I must revisit them, though, to see if I can change my mind, or at least get to the end of the story.

She also wrote a series of modern (i.e. 60s ish) detective books, which are much shorter and easier to get through, and quite fun. I think they all got new names, as they were originally all Dolly and the something bird (Dolly being the detective's yacht), but calling his various female co-stars "bird" became a bit non-PC. Try Rum Affair.

Me! I love her. I currently re-reading Niccolo with my DD book group - we're on Unicorn Hunt. I think I prefer the Niccolo books to the Lymond Chronicles, though I adore them both. DD has a very active fan base.

Love 'em, absolutely love 'em - with the exception of King Hereafter which I could take or leave (emphasis on leave).

Checkmate would be my Desert Island Discs if-you-could-only-take-one-book book.
