Will anyone else admit to liking survivalist fiction?

I doubt it.

But any good recommendations would be appreciated, if I'm not in a minority of one...

what do you mean?

stories where people have overcome great odds or stories where they has been a world wide issue and only a few people are left?

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 16:42

Sorry, that was unclear!

Stories where a worlwide/nationwide catastrophe has occurred, and rather than just people struggling to survive, intentional survivalist communities doing their thing, and putting into play what they've been prepping for.

I know, I know....Grin

You don't mean dystopian fiction, do you? Not really sure what survivalist fiction is. What have you already read?

Timeforabiscuit · 09/09/2014 17:02

I'll stand proud and admit I like it Grin

The forest of hands and teeth series (a bit young adult)
World war Z (liked this very much!)
Nothing to envy - written about North Korea, but if this isn't the last word in survival I REALLY don't want to hear the last word!

DuchessofMalfi · 09/09/2014 17:11

Nothing to Envy is outstanding, but not fiction. I was horrified that life could be that bad there.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 17:18

I like dystopian too Duchesse, but kind off veer off into survivalist as well.

I have enjoyed James Wesley Rawles 'Survivors' and 'Patriots'.You have to be able to filter some of the content I find as they're very all american macho god fearing. But I still enjoy the read Blush

Time I love WWZ (love zombies) but more talking about the specifically survivalist branch.'Nothing to envy' sounds interesting!

I also enjoy non fiction survivalist stuff.

Not doing myself any favours here, am I ? Grin

I would like it. Love anything end of the world ish Any recommendations from things you've read?

DorisIsALittleBitPartial · 09/09/2014 17:22

And me! Happy to hear your recommendations!

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 17:27

Well, I'm limited on what I have read tbh.
Some of Jerry Aherns 'The Survivalist' series, and a few odds and sods over the years.

Last gasp. Trevor Hoyle
When we have poisoned the air and politics has pushed it even further.

I have read it several times and it really sticks with you

Timeforabiscuit · 09/09/2014 17:31

There is a UK preppers website which may have some good reading recommendations, I think they go for guide books and "how to" YouTube tutorials more than actual readable novels.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 17:37

I must admit that I have browsed that sort of thing. And to be fair, they can be interesting.

But books are the real deal for me!

I'll look up Last Gasp miss.Never heard of that one!

OP posts:
ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 17:39

Oh.That does look good from the write ups!

OP posts:
missnevermind · 09/09/2014 17:48

Happy to help Grin
Will look up a few off here too
Z for Zachariah and WWZ have already been read.

DuchessofMalfi · 09/09/2014 17:52

Here's a list of books I found on Goodreads some of which may be relevant, and there are links to other lists. Some of them are fiction, but there's quite a lot of non-fiction.

Beetlemilk · 09/09/2014 17:53

I have read a couple. The Road is great I think.
Also liked WWZ.
Haven't read Nothing to Envy or Last Gasp. May take a look on amazon.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 17:59

Now you're talking Duchesse!
Some of them look great.I recognised one I've read.

The Road is really unnerving isn't it?

I enjoyed Alex Scarrows After light and last light (think thats the correct titles).

HopefulHamster · 09/09/2014 18:09

What can you recommend OP?

I like post-apocalyptic fiction (eg things like The Stand, The Road, World War Z, The Postman, Wool, Oryx and Crake)a lot, and would be happy to read one where the focus is on survival rather than supernatural stuff or one lone man flailing about.

I don't want super blokey almost Bear Grylls stuff though.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:13

Well thats the rub Hopeful.

So far everything I've come across is Bear Gryllish, or worse...

but I still like it.

I'm just fascinated by the intentional survivalist community/ survival plan stuff.

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 09/09/2014 18:14

The road
The stand
White horse
The girl with all the gifts
The passage

superbagpuss · 09/09/2014 18:15

I love post disaster books, started reading them at school and still enjoy them now

I think their was a sequel to oryx and crake from the other point of view

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:18

For the post disaster side, 'the death of grass' by john christopher is very good. Also,'survivors' by terry nation.

More books/more explanation

The Stand - Stephen King, plague/supernatural
The Road - Cormac McCarthy, awesomeness
World War Z - good zombie treatment
Wool - Hugh Howey, science fiction, world to survive in has already been built - but what's left of world outside it
Oryx and Crake - Atwood, meh, okay not for me
Where late the sweet birds sing - Kate Wilhelm, an SF classic, bit dated now, world heading towards disaster, extended family builds big community/complex to survive - worth a go?
Alas Babylon - old, I've read this but can't remember it so maybe meh?
Feed - Mira Grant, post-zombie apocalypse, more about bloggers (blogging about zombies) than actual zombie attacks
Earth Abides, another plaguey classic, can barely remember it but apparently I enjoyed it.
The Postman - David Brin, could be worth? Society has collapsed, survivor wanders about, becomes a postman :D

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:24

Oh that Kate Wilhelm one looks worth reading a review on!

I enjoyed the mira grant books.
Try the madeliene roux, david moody, j l bourne,z recht, and joe mckinney ones if you like a zombie read.
