Will anyone else admit to liking survivalist fiction?

I doubt it.

But any good recommendations would be appreciated, if I'm not in a minority of one...

Oh I wonder if anyone on this thread can help me. I remember reading a book as a teen where there had been a disaster but long long ago and communities living now were isolated and primitive. I remember they didn't know what the roads and pavements were for, eg why is this bit raised up? The community it centered on was female driven, they feared men. One day a girl out on horseback meets a man travelling from another community where I think they had retained a bit more knowledge of how society used to be and men and women lived as equals.

Anyway that is all I can remember and it drives me mad that I can't remember.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:28

Oh I don't know.I'll rattle my brain cells though...

I have a post apocalyptic book on my shelf which I haven't read yet.
It has a person on the front on a horse, and its called 'a gift upon the shore' by m k wren.
just might be worth checking out?

Has anyone read The Survivors Series by Susan Beth Pffifer ?

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:47

I can't remember if I actually read one or whether they were on my 'list'.

Any good?

I don't think it is that one from the Wikipedia synopsis. Thanks though

CotedePablo · 09/09/2014 18:48

Justin Cronin's 'The Passage' and 'The Twelve' are good reads. There's supposed to be a third book to make a trilogy, but no sign of it yet.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 18:48

What a shame!

I think the third Cronin book is released next month.

Beetlemilk · 09/09/2014 19:00

The Long Walk by Richard Bachman (Steven King) is kind of survivalist, in that the competitors in The Long Walk have to survive or die.

CotedePablo · 09/09/2014 19:02

Thanks VivaLeBeaver. I'll look forward to that.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 19:04

It seems there's so little out there in the particular sub-genre I like.
Perhaps I'll have to write a novel myself.
But then I'd know the ending Sad
You can't win...

Dead bastards and Alisin Hewitt is trapped are both good.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 19:08

Woohoo a zombie book I've not read Innocent Grin
I'll definitely be seeking dead bastards out.

Madeleine roux also wrote sadie walker is stranded -I recommend!

An old one but still excellent is Domain by James Herbert.

ThisFenceIsComfy · 09/09/2014 19:14

The Passage by Justin Crinan is absorbing - I can't tell you what it's about really as it would be a spoiler

The NewsFlesh zombie trilogy by Mira Grant is also really good.

I love an apocalyptic story

ThisFenceIsComfy · 09/09/2014 19:15

Sorry that's Cronin

ThisFenceIsComfy · 09/09/2014 19:16

Oops sorry I see you've read the Mira Grant trilogy

WireCat · 09/09/2014 19:17

I like these type of books, but nothing where zombies are involved.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 19:18

No sorry's here, me dear. Smile

I actually have The Passage but not read it.
I really must since its had such a good review on this thread.

Would Cloud Atlas count? I fucking love that book and actually just typing the title has given me a chill down my back.

cruikshank · 09/09/2014 19:19

It's not all survivalist though - he skips around a bit. Agree with whoever mentioned Oryx and Crake.

fruitpastille · 09/09/2014 19:22

Have you read Outpost? Ticks a lot of your boxes - survivalist and kind of zombie. I found the writing style annoying though.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 19:24

Not sure, cruik but it looks interesting!

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 19:24

Yes, fruit -I enjoyed it to a point.
