Will anyone else admit to liking survivalist fiction?

I doubt it.

But any good recommendations would be appreciated, if I'm not in a minority of one...

IAm, the book with the female-led society could be the sequels to Plague 99 by Jean Ure - Come Lucky April and Watchers at the Shrine. I haven't read then, but I think one of the societies in the post-plague world is female-led.

HopefulHamster · 09/09/2014 19:30

Swansong is supposed to be good (think it's a plaguey one with lots of viewpoints ala Stephen King) but I haven't got around to it yet.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2014 19:46

Me, me, me.

Okay. Here goes.

The, 'Gone' series by Michael Grant is YA but has groups of teenagers organising themselves and making efforts not just to stay alive but to retain a sense of community and order etc.

Frank Worsley's bok about Shackleton's men being stranded on Elephant Island, on the 'Endurance' expedition to the Antarctic. Non-fiction.

Apsley Cherry Garrard - The Worst Journey in the World - a survivor of Scott's Terra Nova expedition, and of a really horrible journey to find penguin eggs! This is so much better than I've reduced it to here. :)

Assume everybody has read, "Touching the Void"?

There's a good one about the man who had to cut his hand off too - I can never remember his time or the title, but will be Google-able.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2014 19:46

And agree with the recs for, "The Passage" - does anybody know when the 3rd is due out?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2014 19:47

Oh, oh - Has anybody mentioned, "Lord of the Flies" yet?

cruikshank · 09/09/2014 19:47

Ooh, isn't that last one 'something hours'? 72 hours or something like that? Fucking cracking, anyway.

BrianButterfield · 09/09/2014 19:48

The Dead and the Gone (YA series) is good from that point of view.

VivaLeBeaver · 09/09/2014 19:54

remus. Next month for the third instalment of The Passage.

Wasn't it you who sent me a pre release copy of The Twelve years ago?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 09/09/2014 20:01

OOOOOOOOOOOOH.

It was, yes. A lovely MNer sent it to me and I passed it on. I feel horrible that I have forgotten her name.

IAmAPaleontologist · 09/09/2014 20:23

ellie I think you are right thank you! It sounds like it was come lucky April.

ThatBloodyWoman · 09/09/2014 20:49

For post apocalyptic (post nuclear to be precise) a really good read is Aftermath by Roger Williams.
Really chilling.

AWimbaWay · 09/09/2014 21:03

It was mentioned up thread but I've just read The girl with all the gifts and was gripped.

atticusclaw · 09/09/2014 21:29

Not read it yet but colony z - the island is free on kindle at the moment.

frogbubbles · 09/09/2014 22:21

Oh domain what a great book. Do love James Herbert the shrine is a good one.

I also love J A Konrath/Jack Kilborn - but Blake Crouch books are brill, some are PA. I'd highly recommend the Wayward Pines Series I think you'd like that, it's about a perfect town, won't say too much as I might spoil it but it's good. I think it's just been picked up by Fox, so will be looking out for that!!

atticusclaw · 10/09/2014 19:10

Hmm - there is a reason why colony z- the island is free on kindle…. I gave up after the first chapter. Impossible to read.

On the other hand, I read Surviving the Evacuation - Book 1 last night and rather enjoyed it. One man's attempt to survive in London after an outbreak. I've downloaded book 2.

ThatBloodyWoman · 10/09/2014 19:21

I think I've ordered that one through the library atticus

I'm a bit excited now!!!

(Did you read a whole book in one night?I'm impressed!)

OP posts:
atticusclaw · 10/09/2014 19:23

I read most of it last night and then the final bit when I was waiting for the DCs to arrive back on the school bus. I thought it was a bit rushed at the end but not bad and liked the fact it was set in the UK.
