I've just finished Sarah Waters latest. Anyone else read it? I loved it. A real page Turner. Almost as good as Night Watch. Hope it's on the booker shortlist.

I thought it was/is one of her best yet. Very waters-ish, more so than the little friend. I was completely utterly gripped. Like Fingersmith it's pacy and very entertaining but it also works on many different levels and is so clever.

It didn't make it :-( Americans bah.

Just finished it. Loved it. She is such a good writer - so so good at using detail to create an atmosphere or a character. I read it immediately after the latest Ian McEwan, and this was so much better.

I just started it. Seems fantastic so far.

I've literally just finished it. I loved it, it was a very enjoyable read, it just raced along.

Yes, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it and I thought it was brilliant, all the strands about class and prejudices, the uncertainties ...

mimbleandlittlemy · 18/09/2014 12:44

I wish I could understand why I found it dull and lifeless and didn't care about anyone given the general raves here and on Amazon. I was so looking forward to it as I have loved all her books (except Affinity), but this one left me absolutely stone cold and so bored I had to force myself to drag on to the end.

Really sad it didn't work for me.

I was really disappointed I usually love Sarah Waters but found it tedious. I was waiting for the twist which would turn everything on its head which Waters does so well and it didn't happen. I also didn't find the relationship between Francis and Lillian to be unconvincing. It didn't deserve to be on the Booker List

ArkhamOffett · 17/10/2014 19:18

I expected to find it a bit dull and lifeless, but it's fascinating and I can't pinpoint why. There are no Big Events, or Exciting Twists and I can't decide yet if it's a little too cosy, but I really like it so far.

ZaraW · 17/10/2014 19:45

Maybe she has changed her style I was expecting something darker such as Lillian getting her husband's life insurance and then Francis being arrested for his death...........

ArkhamOffett · 17/10/2014 19:49

Cheers, Zara.

I loved it. Am in complete agreement.

Zara, there's a spoiler thread somewhere!
