being asked "what are you reading"? Invariably I tell them the title and get a blank look or have to work out how to describe a complicated plot in a few sentences. Plus its normally while I'm reading and really don't want a conversation!

No! You're not the only one at all! I find it oddly intrusive....I used to read at work all the time...alone, on my break and then some twat would come bumbling in and interrupt me and say "What are you reading?"

i wanted to say "It's PRIVATE if you don't mind!" Grin

Glastokitty · 21/08/2014 00:59

God yes, why do you want to know ffs?

Eminybob · 21/08/2014 01:17

I used to just hold up the book for them to read the cover, but the kindle has put a stop to that Sad

The only one who hates...

You are clearly not the only one, but this is by no means a problem for everyone. I enjoy talking about the books I read and welcome such questions.

DuchessofMalfi · 21/08/2014 12:31

I like talking about the books I read too, but there's a time and a place :).

If I'm engrossed in reading and have got to an interesting or exciting part of the story I don't like to have my connection to the story broken by someone interrupting to ask what I'm reading. But don't mind talking when I've got to the end of a chapter or convenient point. DH understands .... now :o

BsshBosh · 21/08/2014 12:40

I don't mind at all. In fact most people I know can't be bothered to ask me as they're not as bookish as I am. Luckily DH & MIL are bookworms so I always have someone to chat about current reading and share/exchange books.

bibliomania · 21/08/2014 15:31

It depends if I'm asked by a reader, who might have an opinion on the book or the author or the genre. I don't mind that. Someone who asks but then who just gives you a blank look - well, why ask?

ReluctantCamper · 21/08/2014 15:34

Yes, that's my big problem, being asked by people who then have nothing to say. I think some people are just made very uncomfortable with the sight of another person engrossed in a book.

Thurlow · 21/08/2014 15:38

I only ever seem to get asked this question when I'm reading Jackie Collins or free Mills & Boon on the Kindle. I never get asked this when I'm read something serious or clever.

BaconAndAvocado · 22/08/2014 20:52

What Côte said.

I wish more plebs people would read and talk about books.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/08/2014 20:53
