Talk to me about Kindles please

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 14:53

The time has come, the Remus said,
to talk of many things
like whether I should buy one
and will I like the thing?
And how the heck do they even work
and other sorts of things.

So - are they idiot proof? What can I do on one? How does one put actual books on to it? Can I listen to music on it? How does one actually buy one and switch it on? Etc etc. And will I hate it? Please bear in mind that I cannot use/do not have a mobile phone or MP3 player or anything, so need words of one syllable or less when discussing anything technical.

Thank you. :)

Remus I was just trying to remember what I did when I got my Paperwhite, I thought it would be complicated to set up (I previously had the kindle app on my ipad so wasn't sure about transferring books over etc)

I switched it on, it said something along the lines of "hang on, I'm just looking for your wifi" it found it, asked for the password and then asked for my Amazon account email and password and that was it!

All my previous kindle books from my ipad were there all nearly lined up on my digital bookshelf.

It also looks things up on Wikipedia, like if I'm reading and a person is mentioned that I want to know more about, I tap and hold on the name and it comes up in a little box their wiki entry.

I'm right up for cocktails & kindles!

Has a nice ring to it, that phrase.

The other lovely thing about Kindle is it comes with a dictionary, so you can highlight a word you don't know the meaning of & the dictionary definition will appear.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 17:40

You can't work the telly by choice?why would you chose not to learn
Will your interest be piqued by the kindle?or will partner do that too

magimedi · 16/08/2014 17:42

If you had read the thread, Scottishmummy, the OP says she doesn't watch telly, therefore has no need to learn how to use it.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 17:44

I have read the thread, and my question remains the same

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 17:45

I don't watch telly - too many books to read. Thanks for your help, ScottishM, but I'm not interested in a conversation about whether I'm an idiot or not (I may well be, but am a fairly intelligent idiot most of the time).

This thread has been v helpful - thanks, all. :)

Remus:

I LOVE my paperwhite (Thanks BiL, ace xmas present).

If you buy one from Amazon, the first time you switch it on, it guides you through linking your kindle to your amazon account. I assume other are similar.

The you either search amazon for the book you want, or go to the kindle section on amazon, and have a look. There are 1000s of free books - most of the classics are free, as are the first in a series of many new authors. You tell Amazon you want the book, and next time your kindle is connected to the web, they appear on there. You don't need to be connected to the internet other than to get a book you've bought on there.

I've got a magnetic cover, and the thing switches off when I shut the cover, and wakes up when I open the cover. Swiping my finger across the page turns the page. there is a menu at the top, but its pretty simple.

You can also change the font size, and look up words you would like to know the meaning of in the inbuilt dictonary (tho it needs the internet for very unusual words, or bits from other lanuages).

I don't do APP's, smart phones or Ipads, and the kindle is fine.

Enjoy - it makes packing to go on holiday much easier - I've even put some kids books on there. Just been away for a week, and I took the kindle for me and the boys. DH took his tablet. No paperbacks - essential in these days of 10 cabin baggage travel!

NerfHerder · 16/08/2014 18:23

Really DON'T get the cheapest, get the paperwhite so you can read outdoors or in bed. Screen is brilliant.
For reading :
I have villette, Balzac's Little Red Inn, the golden bough, treasure island, all lined up, all free.
There are 'deals of the day' every day, deals of the month etc. You see them on Amazon site

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 18:28

Agree don't get cheapest.get backlit eg paperwhite

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 18:38

I can't imagine wanting to read it in bed, or anywhere except on buses and trains and on holiday. Could buy the cheap one, then if it is good, buy the other one and give cheap one to dp!

OP posts:
ohbladee · 16/08/2014 18:48

You're not going to swap between kindle and paperback are you though op? Kindle on the bus then switch to book in bed...?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 18:49

I usually have one fiction and one non-fiction on the go, at least.

OP posts:
Groovee · 16/08/2014 18:53

At the moment I have a kindle fire but next time I would buy a paperwhite.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 18:53

There's no sense in buying a cheapie, buy one that fulfils needs
If you want to read in bed you need a kindle that's got light eg paper white
Amazon sell refurbished but there not much price difference.i have fire hd kindle, and it great

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 19:17

But my need = be able to read an old classic or three on the bus. That's all. I have a very nice bedside lamp! :)

OP posts:
OwlCapone · 16/08/2014 19:28

Because the easiest way to hold something for an extended period of its time is at or near its center of gravity. Not its edges.

Just like we hold books.

Nope. Still not getting it. I don't hold a book in the middle of the page either. I generally hold them with two hands at the edges so my fingers aren't covering the text at all.

My Paperwhite can easily be held in one hand, gripped at the edge and resting on my palm.

OwlCapone · 16/08/2014 19:35

get the paperwhite so you can read outdoors

You don't need a Paperwhite to read outdoors.
