Talk to me about Kindles please

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 14:53

The time has come, the Remus said,
to talk of many things
like whether I should buy one
and will I like the thing?
And how the heck do they even work
and other sorts of things.

So - are they idiot proof? What can I do on one? How does one put actual books on to it? Can I listen to music on it? How does one actually buy one and switch it on? Etc etc. And will I hate it? Please bear in mind that I cannot use/do not have a mobile phone or MP3 player or anything, so need words of one syllable or less when discussing anything technical.

Thank you. :)

you register the kindle to your amazon account so it knows which kindle to send it to. I have 2 kindles on my account so have kindle and kindle2 to choose from when I buy a book (although I can send it to both if I want). I have let dh use my old one!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 16:41

I don't even know what an app is, and I don't have a phone, so now I am even more confused!

I love mine. (Sighs and strokes kindle) i can just download any book anytime I want. I recently lost mine and made dp buy me another just deregistered old onto new so didnt lose a single book. No books cluttering up my house.

Wouldn't be without mine.

ilovepowerhoop · 16/08/2014 16:42

I also have the kindle app on my phone and ipad so I can read the same book on any of the devices and it will synchronise my progress to the furthest read page.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 16:42

App,graphic interface on ipad to use a product
You're online,mn so youre not that tech illiterate?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 16:44

I can switch a laptop on and work MN etc - but that's about it!

You have as many kindles as you want.you name the device, then send book to that named device
So mums kindle,child kindle,etc
Book sent to kindle of your choice via internet
Get a backlit kindle, easier to read on

ilovepowerhoop · 16/08/2014 16:46

you can get a kindle app for your pc so could read books on there without owning a kindle. You get apps for phones, ipads, other tablets , etc too (i.e. apps are not just for ipad)

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html/ref=hp_2200783640_pci?nodeId=200388510 - tells you how to get kindle app for your pc

NerfHerder · 16/08/2014 16:47

They have kindles in waterstones also [enabler]
I have a case for mine to get round the holding issue. Look on Amazon for tuf-luv [sic] they have a hand strap because my hands are too small to hold kindle one-handedly.
Has made it v easy. Mine was 8 in the sale.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 16:47

Urgh - one step at a time! I don't want to read books on my laptop - I will read real books when not travelling.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 16:54

I was addressing the op,i think go look at a kindle.its really not complicated
Choice is only which one you like and Buy a cheap cover

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 16:55

Granny even likes kindle thats some goin, she can barely switch on telly

Vitalstatistix · 16/08/2014 16:55

after banging on about how kindles are all that is evil Grin and cannot compare to the beauty of an actual book - how it feels, how it smells, etc etc

I bought one.

and I LOVE IT!

I am a traitor to the cause Wink

I love how easy it is. I can read so much and I don't have to faff about going and buying books and finding storage for them.

I have amazon prime so have access to their library and also the loads of free books (which are mostly dross but I've happened across some gems) and that's great because I find I am giving a chance to books I would not have bought because I wouldn't have been willing to waste my money.

I've only got the cheap basic kindle. It does the job. No point spending more.

ilovepowerhoop · 16/08/2014 16:56

I got my cheap cover from amazon - Tecknet I think (was under £10)

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 16:56

If you want to watch movies get kindle fire
Get a backlight kindle,eg has light source
And there are astonishing 99p kindle bargains

magimedi · 16/08/2014 16:56

It is also well worth putting books you are thinking off on to your wish list as it is then marked when the price drops.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 16:57

Erm...I actually (honestly) have no idea how to switch the telly on - would never choose to watch TV, although dp usually has the damn thing on.
