The time has come, the Remus said,
to talk of many things
like whether I should buy one
and will I like the thing?
And how the heck do they even work
and other sorts of things.

So - are they idiot proof? What can I do on one? How does one put actual books on to it? Can I listen to music on it? How does one actually buy one and switch it on? Etc etc. And will I hate it? Please bear in mind that I cannot use/do not have a mobile phone or MP3 player or anything, so need words of one syllable or less when discussing anything technical.

Thank you. :)

Ok,you're amish?im not convinced you're so clueless, does work have computers?
kindle is literally one power switch on top item
You place order, chose which kindle to send.it goes wirelessly

CoteDAzur · 16/08/2014 17:00

If you but your Kindle at Waterstones, you'll have to suffer their changing advertisements on your Kindle until the end of time, I'm told.

Try it out at Waterstones or whatever but get it from Amazon, imho.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 17:02

Yes buy from amazon, and chose no adverts option

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 17:02

Grin at Amish. I'm fine on computers, providing they are working. Switch on /go on net / look at dresses and moan about books / make PPTs and resurces for work. The end.

I'm going to go and have a play, next time I'm in town.

Encouragingly on mn there's always a kindle thread
I got recommended the luminaries and loved it

TheHandbagOfGlory · 16/08/2014 17:05

I was against ereaders, until I went to the PIL's for a "holiday", no internet, can't speak the language so no TV and I had only one book which I finished too quickly.

Now I have a Paperwhite and I have all my books with me wherever I go! Amazing.

Also if you tap and hold on a word the inbuilt magic dictionary tells you what it means (I use mine a lot, not ashamed) and I like the feature that you can see passages that other readers of the same book have highlighted.

If, say, 5 other readers highlighted a passage on their kindle mine highlights it and says "5 readers highlighted" and I usually think "WHY?!" I like that for some reason.

And I can think that I would like to read a book and actually be reading that book in about 2 minutes.

You don't need an ipad, forget all that.

You just need to buy a basic Kindle. You can 'name' it - say, 'Remus's Kindle'. So, you can then log in to Amazon on your PC (or Mac) and go to the Kindle books page. Browse for books you like the sound of, or search for specific ones. Decide to buy (or download for free): you can do this with 1-click when logged in. It will ask which Kindle to send it to. Choose 'Remus's Kindle' and voila! It will appear as a new item on your Kindle, if and when you're connected up to a wifi signal.

I bought a basic Kindle for a 90-year old of my acquaintance who's never used a computer, and finds it hard to understand anything techy at all. She LOVES it.

I download stuff for her, delete the books she's read and keep it organised (you can create different folders of books, so in fact more than one person could share a Kindle, and each could have their own virtual 'shelf' of books on the one device - or you could have one folder of fiction, and another of non-fiction...that's the next level up!).

I'm a 'real books' person but even I've succumbed, and have the Kindle app so I can use my ipad as a kindle.

I'm sure your helpful friends will come round and help you get set up, preferably with Wine!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 17:10

Lovely. All v inspiring and useful.

So, once it's on the Kindle, I don't need wifi to actually read stuff then?

I like the bookshelf idea.

Dh bought me the kindle paperwhite 12 months ago, it took a while months and months but am now used to it. It's great for taking on holiday, reading on train, plane etc etc.

As the screen is backlit, you can read it in bright sunlight or the dark which is great for me as quite often wake at stupid o'clock!

Can't help with the technical setting it up side, but tis very easy to download books, just a quick tap on the screen.

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 17:11

She wasn't advised to buy ipad.Give she doesn't know what app is,and cant work telly, good advice
Kindle is astonishingly easy

scottishmummy · 16/08/2014 17:12

No dont need internet at all to read on the kindle
Only need internet to download purchase

CoteDAzur · 16/08/2014 17:13

"So, once it's on the Kindle, I don't need wifi to actually read stuff then?"

Yes.

magimedi · 16/08/2014 17:14

Once your book is on your kindle you can read it where ever you are.

You only need wifi to buy the book from Amazon.

You just need to keep your kindle battery charged up, it will go for ages on a charge, but being connected to wifi uses more battery life.

Honestly, just get yourself the basic one & get going - you won't regret it.

It's £59 - you wouldn't haver like this over a coat for that money!

Go on, go on, go on...........................

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 17:15

Magi - I'm deffo getting it. Just need to make sure I understand it!

Blatant attention seeking here - I've started a thread about Calibre - do any of you use it & can offer any tips?

magimedi · 16/08/2014 17:18

Remus - You are talking to the woman who had problems with her new alarm clock.

I have never used anything that is so obvious & easy.

Let us know how it goes, please.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 16/08/2014 17:24

Oh I am neither clueless, nor ditzy really. If I care enough about something, I learn how to use it. Dp in charge of housework and I don't like watching TV, so don't need to know how to switch it on.

magimedi · 16/08/2014 17:26

I am lost in admiration for you lack of knowledge re vacum & washing machine.

I rescind my offer of coffee & kindle learning meet up in favour of Wine & kindle meet up. Grin
