I am flying to the uk next friday from canada. Can anyone recommend a really gripping book to take my mind off the flying (hate flying). I like most anything if they are good, even a good non-fiction. Nothing to deep or slow, I need it to grip me within a few pages. thanks. I am going shopping today for a book so all suggestions appreciated.

a Harlan Coben thriller? v easy to get into and normally grips you till the end (I normally end up reading them v quickly over the course of a few nights because I'm so keen to find out what happens!)

You may have already gone shopping, but the Jodi Picoult books are very easy to read, and get into from first few pages. might not be literary classics but are gripping. i can sympathise as i'm terrified of flying, seems like a good tactic.

Alan Carr's 'Easyway to enjoy flying' cured me. Before I read his book I would have read a Jilly Cooper - one of her books once helped me pretend I wasn't on a very bumpy small plane.

ooh the Alan Carr book sounds perfect. I can sympathise with you completely on your fear of flying. I am pathetic. I am defo going to get the Alan Carr book before I go. Anyway, I find funny books grip me more than any other so I would recommend Frank McCourts Teacher Man. I started reading it yesterday on the bus going to work and missed my stop. Completely forgot where I was. Try that. Good luck.

I haven't gone yet but will definately write these down and I think I will get a couple. Last time I flew to the UK which is an all night flight, I didn't sleep at all.
