I get that the adopted son is her neighbour but what happened to Jess? Surely it wasn't her body in the rucksack & are we supposed to think Anne put it there?
Can anyone help my confusion?

I remember being confused about the ending of that book so I've just gone back and reread the last chapter.

SPOILER ALERT

When it talks about the duffle bag behind the partition it suggests that Anne doesn't know about it, ie Anne didn't kill jess.

Go back a few chapters to the one called Jess leaves. It talks about her meeting up with the neighbour's son who is in the process of leaving the army. They have a fumble in his car and she laughs at his flaccid penis. When she tries to leave the car, he won't let her.

Therefore my interpretation of the ending is that he kills Jess, bundles her into the bag and hides her in the attic. He then disappears without her. Later in the book it goes on to say he was killed, possibly in Northern Ireland.

Downloaded this one on Kindle a few years ago. Think it was free, before going on hols. So far not read it. Keep putting it off. Is it worth reading?

Thank you

I loved this book and think the title and the cover do it a great disservice. I had the impression it was just a chick lit book (a genre which I don't read at all) but I found it incredibly well written, rather multi-layered and complex and with quite dark and sad themes. I really would recommend it.

Agree with ilkley's interpretation of the ending, by the way.

Thanks will give it a go. Running put of books at moment. There don't seem to be many bargains out there at the moment.

I loved the book, totally not what I expected.... although was glad to see I was not the only one who wondered what actually happened to Jess, so had to goolgle the question and found this thread. :)

Me too!

SPOILER ALERT

Jean's next door neighbour was the boy from next door's aunt. She later told Jean that her nephew had died when driving drunk 'just outside Glasgow'. So not in Northern Ireland.

Really enjoyed this book.but very confused by ending of Jess. Re read relevant chapters it just said he won't let her leave the car after floppy penis incident first I thought she died when he crashed car in Glasgow but timeline gets confused.
Nothing really to say her dead body is in loft just her duffel bag.

Left hanging with this ending bit disappointed with the ending
