So where should I start?

If you want to start at the very beginning of the Discworld series - and some of the 'in jokes' do carry on through then The Colour of Magic is the first one.

Or try Good Omens - Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett

Start with Guards,Guards.

I personally wouldn't start at the beginning. Colour Of Magic and The Light Fantastic are not his best IMO.

Going Postal could be a good one? Or Mort.

Or yes, Guards! Guards!

Because it's the first in the Watch series of books and it's the funniest and most accessible of them.

Sorry, COM & Light Fantastic aren't the best. Love Guards! Guards! and Watch books generally pretty good, Soul Music is not bad, Wyrd Sisters & The Witches books.....

I've struggled with Dodger though.

Start at the beginning. You have so very many to read and you will love the way the bullies get what they deserve every time.
I love the Wee Free Men series with Tiffany Aching. Try A Hat Full of Sky.
Or , if there is a particular subject or 'thing' you are into then there'll be a Pratchett that explores that theme.
Gosh you have so many characters to meet. You'll meet Death. And The Death of Rats. And Quoth.
Snuff was bloody ace. Sam Vimes bursting with righteous indignation is just smashing.

Even Sir Terry admits there's not much of a plot in Colour of Magic.

Go for Guards Guards.

I may have to drag my collection back out of the loft now. I haven't read Mort for about ten years.

My favourite stand alone story is either Equal Rites or Monstrous Regiment.

Equal Rites was my first, and is great fun. It's also a good intro to Ankh Morpork, whereas Guards Guards is perhaps better appreciated once you have some knowledge of the city under your belt. Guards Guards is excellent.

Does anyone else play the "who would play a Pratchett character" game? I think Helen Mirren was born to play Granny Weatherwax, and Ian Richardson would have made a superb Patrician.

I like Susan Sto Helit. She's so down to earth and cynical and totally pissed off being death's, granddaughter.

I'd start with Wee Free Men, then move on to the rest of the Tiffany Aching series, before hopping back to Mort and Equal Rites.

I'd start with the Tiffany Aching books as it gives you a good idea if you'll like his style

The Hogfather is one of my favourites - purely because of Susan Sto Helit's approach to parenting (and the children's reaction to the real pigs in the department store doing a really big wee).
