So where should I start?

OP posts:
Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 15/05/2014 22:04

I hated the sky adaptations. I'm sad that the series end is inevitably approaching.

JuniperTisane · 15/05/2014 22:05

I will be taking her approach to dealing with monsters under the bed, and that's for sure.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 15/05/2014 22:06

No I see Sybil as more...Home Counties. Think Jennifer Saunders would have been good.

JuniperTisane · 15/05/2014 22:08

Not sturdy enough. She has the right ship-in-full-sail attitude though.

CMOTDibbler · 15/05/2014 22:10

Sybil was based on one of those tall, sturdy, terribly posh ladies who breed dogs, so Miranda Hart with an RP voice might work

figgypuddings · 15/05/2014 22:10

Miriam Margoyles would be perfect.

MrsCakesPremonition · 15/05/2014 22:10

Sybil will always be Geraldine James for me.
Mackenzie Crook would make an excellent Rincewind.

PacificDogwood · 15/05/2014 22:13

Thank you for this thread and the online guide - that's my summer's reading sorted Grin

I too have never read a TP and have been a bit intimidated by the where bloody number of them all.

Guards! Guards! it is

JuniperTisane · 15/05/2014 22:15

I want a pet dragon now.

Surely Mackenzie Crook is Nobby?

brightonshaws · 15/05/2014 22:15

Hat full of sky

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 15/05/2014 22:16

I always saw Pete Postlethwaite as Vimes. Not sure now.

RustyBear · 15/05/2014 22:16

Small Gods has always been my favourite, closely followed by Night Watch, though I think that one is best read in its proper place within the Watch sequence. I have never been much of a Rincewind fan, in fact reading the first two books nearly put me off altogether, until my nephew suggested I try the Watch books.

MrsCakesPremonition · 15/05/2014 22:17

You'd probably have to get Andy Serkis to play Nobby.

MrsCakesPremonition · 15/05/2014 22:19

Pete Postlethwaite clearly modelled for the illustrations of Vimes in Where's My Cow.

JuniperTisane · 15/05/2014 22:20

Terry Pratchett has always done best writing about ordinary people, (whatever their species), living in a magical world rather than the magic and wizardy stuff itself.

Fishandjam · 15/05/2014 22:29

Josie Lawrence as Magrat.

iklboo · 15/05/2014 22:36

Mackenzie Crook's too tall & thin for Nobby. Andy Serkis would be good. Mark Addy for Sgt Colon? Like Miriam Margolyes for Sybil if she could be 'reined in'.

Look what you've started OP Grin

5OBalesofHay · 15/05/2014 22:39

You've not missed anything. Found them tedious and irritating

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 15/05/2014 22:49

MrsCakesPremonition yes! Grin

BernardlookImaprostituterobotf · 15/05/2014 22:58

Colour of magic/Light Fantastic is also different in structure to the rest of the series so, apart from the footnotes, isn't as representative imo.

I love Pratchett all of them, even the less developed. There's the discworld series but his children's books are also a good read. I still have a fondness for The carpet people and The Bromeliad, not DW but fantasy. I think everyone should read The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents too (this is Discworld but more standalone).

I would save Jingo, Pyramids and Moving pictures until you have got into the series personally.
I do like Rincewind, sad he's not getting the love! The last continent, Lords and Ladies, Carpe Jugulum, Witches abroad, Men at Arms, Snuff, The Truth, Reaper man, Mort, Interesting Times, A hat full of sky and making money are my favourites from each group.
Although I realise that's nearly all of them and there's very little in it.
I love Thief of Time and prefer Susan in this but have seen it doesn't always get the love The Hogfather does.

And I hated the Sky shows, even though it has a lot of my favourite actors in it and even though Sir P was in it and advised I thought the style missed the mark. So personally don't feel that you could judge one way or the other from the tv if you would like the books.

SpamTroll · 15/05/2014 23:03

The wee free men books are hilarious. They are kids books but very readable

vrtra · 16/05/2014 06:03

I have to disagree on Mark addy as colon. He was born to play ridcully! Esp since esme is clearly a Yorkshire woman

Fishandjam · 16/05/2014 09:13

Sean Pertwee as Vimes.

PacificDogwood · 16/05/2014 10:03

Guards guards is on my kindle now. I cannot wait to read it. Thanks, all. Not cheap for an ebook but the reviews sound great Smile

Fishandjam · 16/05/2014 10:20

Pacific, you'll wonder what took you so long!
