So where should I start?

DH absolutely loves Prachett. I tried to read one of his books and really didn't like it at all. I think he's like Marmite.

Ridcully is more like Brian Blessed a few years ago

MrsCakesPremonition · 16/05/2014 18:56

Or possibly Robert Hardy.

Sybilvimes · 16/05/2014 19:03

Sam is much more attractive than Pete Postlewaite!

MrsCakesPremonition · 16/05/2014 19:12

Philip Glensiter?

iklboo · 16/05/2014 19:15

Well, especially now poor Pete Postlethwaite is no longer with us, yes.

iklboo · 16/05/2014 19:16

I always imagined Stephanie Cole as Esme.

Sybilvimes · 16/05/2014 19:21

I think Alice from the Vicar of Dibley would have made a great early Magrat.

MrsCakesPremonition · 16/05/2014 19:47

Sally Phillips (Smack the Pony et al) might also be Magrat.

You have missed out. He's my favourite author ever, I think. Tbh, Colour of Magic was horribly boring, my favourites were Unseen Academicals, Making Money, Going Postal, the Monstrous Regiment, the Hogfather and Carpe Jugulum. I also liked Jingo, Feet of Clay and Witches Abroad. And Guards! guards. And Equal Rites. So, loads of them. I love all the witch books, Nanny Ogg is my favourite character ever!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 16/05/2014 19:56

Love the witches series and Tiffany Aching. Monstrous Regiment is my favourite though. Pratchett writes brilliant female characters. And he is so moral and decent, I love that he is so decent.

TheSarcasticFringehead · 16/05/2014 19:57

Oh, Mort is good too. There's no point listing my favourites, it will be nearly all of them. It was the second one I read, I tried Colour of Magic, gone Hmm and abandoned it all, so it was a couple of years later when I read Mort. Death is so funny.

bigbadbarry · 19/05/2014 19:06

Pyramids was the first I read so I still have a soft spot for that - it is one of the most obvious pastiches too so I think that could make a good introduction to his particular style of humour.

For those who don't normally like the fantasy genre, then Pratchett's book "Nation" is an excellent one to start with enjoy his writing style without the fantasy. It's also good if you like proper olde worlde pirates!

I do personally however love the Discworld and Death is my favourite so are any books with him. I also quite like the Night's Watch. Reading all the Discworld books in order is probably the best way to go in my opinion, but understand that children make it difficult to find time to read!
