I also read an emily Barr and a Diane chamberlain. The latter was better than the former- even I thought emily Barr ( the sleeper) was badly written- but I rarely notice bad writing, lol! However, not sure I can face a second Diane chamberlain !

Any ideas?

Have you read anything by Elizabeth Haynes? Her first one 'into the darkest corner' is brilliant.

Is it very dark and scary?

I've just finished The Storyteller by Jodi picoult, I don't always like her books but I really enjoyed this one.

How abou Chris Cleave? The Other Hand is fantastic

Not too much. You feel anxious for the main character but I wasn't scared. It deals with domestic violence so might not be a suitable read for all. But I devoured it in a couple of days, I really couldn't stop reading it.

Jenny Eclair's novels - she has written 3 and they are all really good – well-written, funny but also dark and with interesting plots and great characters. Covers look like chick lit but they are much more than that.

Ditto Kate Atkinson & Sophie Hannah. Recently read The Rosie Project by Graham (or possibly Graeme) Simsion - hilarious! Would definitely recommend.

Agree Apple Tree Yard very good read. Not a thriller as such but is a page turner.

How about The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (J K Rowling) - another good one.

I'm readind Love, Nina by Nina Stibbe atm. Very funny tales if life as a nanny/student in early 80s. All sorts of well known people crop up in it. Would make a good holiday read.

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield - creepy and gothic tale, well-written page-turner.

Try Susan Elliot Wright - The Things We Never Said. She's meant to be the new Maggie O'Farrell. I also liked Penny Hancock's Tideline so second that.

Ooh yes I really enjoyed The Things We Never Said as well!
