Intellectually, I feel I should dislike her six novels about upper-middle and upper-class New Yorkers whose charming eccentricities are often embedded in extremely old money, and which can look rather smug, even when they deal with adultery and bereavement. But in fact they are the comfort reads I am fondest of.
