juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

  1. The Drawing Of The Three - Stephen King

Part 2 of the Dark Tower series. I really, really enjoyed this - looking forward to continuing the story, though don't have part 3 from the library yet.

AnneWentworth · 04/01/2014 17:37

Finally, I am able to contribute no1.

  1. Pride & Prejudice, Jane Austen

Just delightful and lovely and always makes me smile.

whitewineandchocolate · 04/01/2014 17:39

Just finished Dark Fire - CJ Sansom (2nd in the Shardlake series), number 1.

Just starting Doris Lessing - The Good Terrorist - a book group read.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2014 17:58

Glad you enjoyed it, Meg. :)

Book One - The Wolves of the Calla (Dark Tower 5)
and if I don't prat around on here all night, I'll finish
Book Two - The Song of Susannah (DT6) tonight.

NunsArePeopleTooDougal · 04/01/2014 18:06

I'll join - I'm on my second book so far this year (the first one was only short).

acsec · 04/01/2014 18:29

I'm on book two - Wolf Cry by Julia Golding

FeelingTheFire · 04/01/2014 18:29

Is this still open to join?

AnneWentworth · 04/01/2014 18:31

Feeling - open all year!

FeelingTheFire · 04/01/2014 18:37

Great! I shall join shortly. :)

Kettricken · 04/01/2014 18:43

I'm in - have just joined the good reads group. I've no idea how many books I read last year but 50 seems an achievable target. I have loads on my kindle and loads on my shelf that my mum has passed on to me once she's read them.
First book for 2014 was The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson and am now reading the 2nd book in the trilogy The Well of Ascension. Brilliant fantasy trilogy!

strawberrypenguin · 04/01/2014 18:55

Those of you who have kindles I have just discovered a fab website called ereaderiq it tracks kindle book prices and lists the best price drops, under £1 books and even better you can set email alerts for books you want so they notify you when the price drops. I've just got life after life for 99p thanks to one of the alerts!

AnneWentworth · 04/01/2014 18:56

Thanks Strawberry. The Luminaries is on my list for this year and is 99p!

MitsuruSenpai · 04/01/2014 19:25
  1. Love Minus Eighty by Will McIntosh

Great sci fi that focuses less on the science and more on the people, all about love and relationships. Easy to read despite the unfamiliar setting and totally absorbing.

Now off to browse the shelves and kindle for number 2!

IWantYourLove · 04/01/2014 20:27

I lurked in 2013 as thought it was no way achievable with a new born and 2 year old. This year I'm determined to do some serious reading, so my resolution is to attempt 50 in 2014 (oh and give blood!).

Just started Here's looking at you. A chick lit Christmas present but its made me laugh out loud so always a good sign.

mitsuru - I would like to try some more fantasy/scifi and that sounds good. Will seek it out.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 04/01/2014 20:41

There are some cracking deals on kindle for 99p at the moment. I have just bought:

One Summer: America 1927, by Bill Bryson

Love, Nina- an interesting-sounding comic memoir about a young nanny. Well-reviewed.

The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt. Really looking forward to this.

Saints Of The Shadow Bible, by Ian Rankin. THE RETURN OF REBUS, YAY! Grin

DuchessofMalfi · 04/01/2014 20:47

Book 2 - Let's Explore Diabetes With Owls by David Sedaris. Very good - really enjoyed.

AntiJamDidi · 04/01/2014 21:02
  1. Divergent by Veronica Roth.

I finished this one this afternoon and enjoyed it so much I'm already halfway through the second in the series. It's a nice easy YA sci fi book that my teenage dd recommended. She has the whole series so it's a nice easy start to the year.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 04/01/2014 22:39
  1. Hunger Games - first time I've ever read a book very quickly after seeing a film. Was much simpler and shorter than I thought it would be. I loved the films so not sure if my enjoyment of the books was just an extension of that so I'm going to read all three ASAP so there's a bit of time before the final film comes out
RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2014 23:22

Book 2 finished.
Next up is The Dark Tower (DT7) then some history books, I think.

Best1sWest · 04/01/2014 23:45
  1. Cinderella in Sunlight - Hermina Black. Broke all my good resolutions for this year with my first book. It's a 1958 romance in Mills and Boon style. The hero is called Vance FGS. In my defence it is a favourite from my teenage years and I wasn't feeling well so I indulged myself. It's a real period piece in terms of snobbery and male/female roles. I've never been sure that it wasn't written with tongue in cheek. Now trying Life after Life again.
DBXmum · 05/01/2014 06:35

Book 1 - the Crimson Petal and the White - Michel Faber
Book 2 - The Blackhouse - Peter May

EmilyAlice · 05/01/2014 07:23

Right I'm in. Thank you so much BitofFun for spotting the Bill Bryson and Love Nina.
Book 1 is another Kindle cheapie: Damian McBride: A Decade of Policy, Plots and Spin.
Fascinating stuff if you are interested in the machinations of spin doctors.

CallingAllEngels · 05/01/2014 08:39

Broke my resolution not to buy any more books. Was seduced by the kindle sale (luminariies, new bill bryson, donna tartt, neil gaiman, hosseini all for 99p each). Thanks fof the tips!

But I'm not allowed to read them yet! Have to get through the stack by my bed and "to read" on my kindle.

Have almost finished book no. 1 - Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro. Have stuck with it even though I think the style of narration is a bit annoying and clumsy.

AnneWentworth · 05/01/2014 09:45

Dbxmum - Crimson Petal and the White was the first book in years I couldn't finish but the friend I gave it to loved it. What did you think?

I was impressed by the Kinfle Sale and bought The Luminaries and Love, Nina.

Goldensunnydays81 · 05/01/2014 10:06

Well I am feeling very happy a very kind friend gave me a kindle for an Xmas/ birthday present Grin I love it and as it is registered to her account it has about 100 books on it already lots of which i think I will enjoy and some a bit different to what I normally read so am looking forward to them.
