juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

Just finished carrion comfort

Good enough read but I got a bit tired of it. Would have been better if the narrative was tighter. Would definitly read more Dan Sims however.

Feel the need for some light relief so no 2 is a perfect proposal by katie forde. I hope it's good, I find her a bit uneven.

Engels 'Never Let Me Go' annoyed the hell out of me. Hope your second book of the year is more enjoyable.

minsmum · 05/01/2014 14:44

Book 4. The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith aka J K Rowling. Very good thoroughly enjoyed it which was a surprise as I didn't like the Harry potter books at all

Do you guys allow 'reading' books via unabridged audiobooks?

I have a looong commute for work so I've started 'reading' on the way with Audible, and then cramming in the 'real' books on holiday and when I'm in between Audibles.

I managed only 23 in 2013 but hoping to up the ante in 2014! What do you reckon, I only listen to unabridged, and it actually gives me a disadvantage as the unabridged books take 12-16 hours to listen to, but I usually nom a book in half that time Grin

On my list so far downloaded for Kindle are:
The Carrier - Sophie Hannah (started!)
The Ocean at the End of the Lane - Neil Gaiman
The Storyteller - Jodi Picoult
The Husband's Secret - Liane Moriaty
Take a Look at Me Now - Miranda Dickenson
When You Walked Back Into My Life - Hilary Boyd

And on Audible:
The Partner - John Grisham (started!)
Dr Sleep - Stephen King
The Cuckoo's Calling - JK Smile

Bit late to the party because I find goodreads quite confusing, but I am aiming for 52 books this year. I just finished Stoner, which I loved, and have my first venture into Wally Lamb (I know this much is true) on the go at the moment.

wiltingfast · 05/01/2014 16:12

Me too oldroan, I also find it v slow so a bit frustrating. How do others find it?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2014 16:46

Another one who finds Good Reads v slow. And it gives me some v odd recs as well.

bishbashboosh · 05/01/2014 17:20

I'm really struggling with The Little friend and the dullness and slowness, must persevere through the layers...

tumbletumble · 05/01/2014 17:40

Nessalina, the rules are that there are no rules! Audio books are fine Smile

DuchessofMalfi · 05/01/2014 17:40

It did take me quite a while to find my way around Goodreads and still don't use a lot of the site. I only really stay within our group, and take personal recommendations only.

The Goodreads recommendations are, quite frankly, often bizarre - computer-generated and occasionally hilarious.

TallRedhead · 05/01/2014 17:46

Joined. Start mat leave in 3 weeks so plan lots of reading while breast feeding!!

Wolfcub · 05/01/2014 18:07

I lost track of who was reading the Brandon Sanderson series, Kettricken? They are fantastic, his next series which I think starts with The Way of Kings is also very good.

OldRoan · 05/01/2014 18:31

bishbashboosh I have tried to read The Little Friend about 3 times now. I keep it by the bath in the vain hope that one day I will just settle into it, but it hasn't ever happened.

Please to know I'm not the only one struggling with Good Reads.

AntiJamDidi · 05/01/2014 18:35
  1. Insurgent by Veronica Roth.
ChillieJeanie · 05/01/2014 19:08

Book two finished. Sherlock Holmes: The Will of the Dead by George Mann. It was very well done, if not precisely in the style of Arthur Conan Doyle. Mann is a steampunk author so there was an element of that thrown in but nothing too excessive to alarm the Holmes purists!

bishbashboosh · 05/01/2014 19:38

I'm struggling with goodreads tooConfused would prefer something more straightforward

The little friend is just dull and boring, u usually look forward to reading but not with this, I'm going to try and I will let you know if it's worth it!!!!

bishbashboosh · 05/01/2014 19:39

Would it be good to list all the books we have read in a list and put a rating ie rubbish, medium, good or wowser

With GoodReads, all I really want to do is put in a start date and then list everything I read up to a specific finish date. I want to include re-reads too. I can't find anything on there that would let me do that, unless I'm being thick.

doris1981 · 05/01/2014 20:16

I would love to join! I will be starting a single thread tonight, can't remember the author, its maria something.
