50 Book Challenge 2014

juneybean · 30/12/2013 11:19

Hopefully nobody minds me starting this thread.

The idea is to read 50 books in 2014 (or more as many people have achieved this year!)

Please also check out our group on Goodreads if you're stuck for ideas of what books to read!

  1. The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver. A fantastic start to the year. This book (set in the Congo from 1960) is brilliant and thought provoking.

I've made a start on Mansfield Park and been pleasantly surprised at it's readability as I don't read a lot of period fiction. Aiming for one book a week so fairly confident I'll manage it.

I have a Nexus tablet with the Kindle app which DH bought me for our anniversary in April & I haven't used it much so far but I've a fair few 'pending' on that.

My weakness is picking up books in charity shops - I have a cupboard full that I haven't read yet. Perhaps I'll get through some of them this year!

GoWestcountry · 03/01/2014 18:53

I'd like to join too, haven't read more than a couple of books a year since my daughter was born and would be good to make a dent in the masses of unread books on my bookshelves!

  1. Sister land by Curtis Sittenfield
Absolutely brilliant, read it in two days. If every book is as enjoyable as this in 2014 I will be very happy. 9/10
bishbashboosh · 03/01/2014 20:55

I've got 376 books on my kindle yet to read Confused

I must have read 60 last year . Finished perfect and Harold fry before Christmas

Now plodding through the little friend and enjoying it Smile

WednesdayNext · 03/01/2014 21:05

Gin I would LOVE that. I haven't found a way to do it either, though I've set up a folder on my kindle called "read" which I move books I've finished into to keep track of what I've read.

I'm currently reading Les Mis. Given that my kindle thinks 1% is 40 pages, I think I'll be some time.

Bit late to this but hello! I've never really thought of keeping count of how many books I've read, this'll be interesting.
Good update upthread thank you AnneWentworth (love the NN)

And thank you for the hint checkpoint Smile

I just finished Rivers of London by Ben Aarronovich. Contemporary and supernatural I really enjoyed it, and will definitely order the next in the series.

Next in the pile by the bed is the second in the Shardlake series.

I've noticed you around too Wednesday Wink

WednesdayNext · 03/01/2014 22:05

Really?!

ThursdayLast · 03/01/2014 22:09

Hahahah, on this thread, no need to hide!
I'm sure I only noticed because I'm pretty certain I tried to have your nn as MY nn. I was stumped for a while Grin

acsec · 03/01/2014 22:09

Book 1 finished! Player One by Douglas Coupland. Pleasantly surprised as they usually have annoying, nothingy endings but this one was a sort of happy ending!!

Foosyerdoos · 03/01/2014 22:10
  1. The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ - Philip Pullman
minsmum · 04/01/2014 00:28

Book 1 Jeeves and the Yule-tide Spirit P.G.Woodhouse
BOOK 2 Deidre and Desire M C Beaton
Book 3 Not quite dating. Catherine Bybee

It's nice to get off the mark

DBXmum · 04/01/2014 02:05

Book 1 - the Crimson Petal and the White.

HairyPloppins · 04/01/2014 02:21

Hi, I'd like to join please. Haven't read anywhere near as much as I would have liked since having DD but still keep buying them. Now have a book mountain to get through before I can justify buying more(might make an exception for the new Donna --Taart). Would love to hear about some new authors I haven't tried.

HairyPloppins · 04/01/2014 02:22

Gah, blooming score through not working.

LackaDAISYcal · 04/01/2014 02:22

Want to join in, but can't log in to goodreads Confused

When I try and log in it says my "email is already taken, please sogn in or retrieve your password", but when I ask it to send a password reset and give my email address, I get an email message saying there are no Goodreads accounts registered under this email.

Same thing when I try and log in with facebook..."email is already taken. Sign in or retrieve your password"

frustrating.

Will just join in here then. Not really reading anything right now, but just downloaded The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt and will start tomorrow.

I must say though 52 books in 52 weeeks seems much more achievable than 52 lbs in 52 weeks Grin

NoSnowJustSand · 04/01/2014 02:46

I'm in again this year. I read a slightly disappointing 39 books last year so didn't quite complete the challenge. However, I've already read 2 books in 2014 and I'm about to start Life After Life; a good start.

Isthiscorrect · 04/01/2014 08:32

Interesting AnneW, I've yet to reach a funny bit, I shall wander on hopeful.

CQ · 04/01/2014 09:06

I'm in - will join the Goodreads group as I'm on there already.

Have 3 on the go so must finish one to get me off the starting blocks. That made no sense.

I will endeavour to clear my unread books from the shelves and not buy too many more in the meantime. But as I volunteer in the Oxfam bookshop that is a very tall order.

WednesdayNext · 04/01/2014 11:31

Grin Thursday! That makes sense. Are you a Jasper Fforde fan by any chance?

Foosyerdoos how was the Pullman? I'm generally a big fan of his but unsure whether to read that one or not!

CheckpointCharlie · 04/01/2014 14:12

Another Jasper Fforde fan! Hi thursday!

My delicious amazon delivery has arrived! I am reading The Gift of a fear, as recommended on here as my first book.

BitOfFunWithSanta · 04/01/2014 14:58
  1. The Aquariums Of Pyongyang - interesting but somehow not as engaging as Nothing To Envy, the best account I've read of real lives in North Korea.
  1. Before I Fall, by Lauren Oliver- superb YA Mean-Girls-meets-Groundhog-Day. Moving and convincingly written.

I'm on The Universe Versus Alex Woods now- really enjoying it.
