Tell me about it, need a new read soon

EmpireBiscuit · 16/11/2013 21:12

Is this a "tell me about the book?" or "tell me about it...I need something else to read too!"

Just want to check before I witter on about the amazing-ness of possibly the best book I've read this year....

Pushing ggirl out of the way: tell me about it, in the sense that I'd like to know what it's about. Love getting recommendations

Sharpkat · 16/11/2013 21:23

Just ordered a copy based on your recommendation Grin

EmpireBiscuit · 16/11/2013 21:26

I guess it's ultimately a love story, based on two "magicians" who are battling it out to win within a circus. Although they don't know the rules or how a victor will be decided. The imagery is beautiful and it is fabulously written.

I would love to rewind time so I could go back to not having finished it.

Thanks Empire, will put that on my LONNNNNGGGG reading list

dizhin79 · 17/11/2013 00:06

I recently read this too, loved it!! very engaging and yes a darkish romance Smile

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/11/2013 17:44

I didn't get on with it - can't stand novels written in the present tense. V pretty cover though!

NK5BM3 · 17/11/2013 20:41

Loved it too!! Took some time to get into it though.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 17/11/2013 22:42

loved it. In a similar fairy tale for adults vein, but with a touch of added swearage and sec, I'm currently reading Deathless by Catherynne M Valente. Bit of revolutionary Russia mixed with Russian fairytale.

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 17/11/2013 22:43

sex. Blush not sec

MrTumblesKnickers · 18/11/2013 00:22

I really disliked it. Too many long-winded (although often enchanting) descriptions, not enough plot. Shallow characters.

BlueSkySunnyDay · 18/11/2013 00:26

I enjoyed it, I agree I didn't fall in love with any of the characters. It's the closest I've ever come you reading something magical like the Faraway Tree for adults though.

DuchessofMalfi · 18/11/2013 06:47

I quite enjoyed The Night Circus - read it earlier this year, but felt the ending fell flat.

Planning to give Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell a go next year. It's supposed to be very good but it is very long, so big time commitment.

lookatmycameltoe · 18/11/2013 08:49

I thought it was awful and couldn't finish it. I couldn't relate to any of the characters and just got bored. It's one of those books that everyone seems to love that I just don't get. I hate it when that happens - it's like not being invited to a party Grin

BlueSkySunnyDay · 18/11/2013 09:58

LOL look - you were invited you just didnt like the music Grin

Thurlow · 19/11/2013 12:26

Jonathan Strange is the greatest book of the past decade. If you liked The Night Circus then it's worth giving it a go.

Ignores the fact that JS seems to be the ultimate Marmite book

Ohwhatfuckeryisthis · 19/11/2013 18:15

hated JS. really couldn't get into it. Sad

DuchessofMalfi · 19/11/2013 18:20

JS has been sitting on my bookshelf for several years, waiting for the right moment. I think 2014 is going to be right time to tackle it.

MrTumblesKnickers · 19/11/2013 18:52

I liked JS a lot, I wouldn't call it the book of the decade but it was well written and really inventive.

if you liked that you may like 'Vintners Luck ' by Elizabeth Knox..
it's a wings thing. ..

tumbletumble · 21/11/2013 14:00

Loved it - The Night Circus, that is.

MrTumblesKnickers · 21/11/2013 14:26

The Vintner's Luck is amazing! I don't really see the similarities between it and the Night Circus though, except maybe the dreamlike quality? Elizabeth Knox's writing has so much more maturity and depth.

Shame the sequel was shit.
