Just finished reading Capital by John Lanchester - loved it! Highly recommended. Quite sad when I finished it. Need to find another excellent read!

Spermysextowel · 27/11/2013 21:28

The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood - really funny.

The Persian Boy by Mary Renault - I think my last read was probably about my 10th over the past 35 years & it still made me weep.

Louise1956 · 28/11/2013 19:32

I recently read how England Made the English by Harry Mount, which was very interesting.

DontHaveAtv · 02/12/2013 10:23

I loved doctor Sleep. Also loved Wonder by R J Palacio.

OneHolyCow · 02/12/2013 15:11

Really loved the Goldfinch. Just finished it and a bit gutted.

lemonbiscuit · 02/12/2013 15:15

Another vote for 'me before you'. I also really enjoyed 'why be happy when you could be normal?' By Jeanette Winterson

Cooroo · 04/12/2013 22:44

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. Really enjoyed reading this take on childhood and magic.

whodunnit · 04/12/2013 22:47

Last Train from Liguria
and by James Adair ,Chasing the White Whale(?) about a two man rowing trip across the indian ocean sounds ok but is fab to read funny, sad, happy .. the sort you want to keep reading but not finish.

quiltmum · 04/12/2013 22:51

I also enjoyed Ring of bright water, the help. I was completely blown away by the Time Travellers Wife.

Just chuckling my way through Catch 22

Jackthebodiless · 04/12/2013 23:02

Favourite books ever - The Secret History by Donna Tart as previously mentioned, and The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. Also love Stone's Fall by Ian Pears.

sparklysilversequins · 05/12/2013 01:01

The Golden Compass. Somehow it completely passed me by.

The last book that I was gutted to finish was The Help. It was just so good I could hardly be bothered to read anything else because it wouldn't be as good.

sparklysilversequins · 05/12/2013 01:02

Somehow it completely passed me by before.

sooperdooper · 07/12/2013 09:16

Instructions for a heatwave by Maggie O'Farrell, I absolutely loved it, the way the stories unfold is just brilliant, just downloaded another one by her straight away!

sooperdooper · 07/12/2013 09:17

Oh I loved Why be happy when you can be normal by Jeanette Winterstone too, but hated Me before you, although lots of people seemed to love it

whodunnit · 08/12/2013 22:13

ooh, sooperdooper, I went to school with Jeanette Winterstone. Convent school, obviously..... I must buy the book you have reminded me!

Taffeta · 09/12/2013 20:12

I have just this minute finished Fingersmith and am bereft!

wiltingfast · 17/12/2013 08:53

Am currently reading the ice and fire series by george rr martin. Have just finished a clash of kings and am waiting for a feast for crows to come back into the library. So far an absolutely ripping read Grin

BumgrapesofWrath · 17/12/2013 19:11

Currently reading The Sisters Brothers, and I haven't enjoyed a book as much in ages.

Twang · 17/12/2013 22:14

Complicity by Iain Banks (again). Also reliving my youth by reading DD Enid Blyton's St Clare series at bedtime Blush

JennyOfOldstones · 20/12/2013 15:27

wiltingfast I love those too, horrible having to wait for the last couple of books to be written, never had that before (except Harry Potter I suppose)

Twang I am thinking of getting all my childhood books and reading them again, St Clare and Mallory Towers especially!!

My favourite book lately was Khaled Hosseini, And the Mountain Echoed. Not as good as the Kite Runner but still better than most books I have read recently.

Kasterborous · 20/12/2013 20:30

I loved Fingersmith too Taffeta

Doctor Sleep but as someone has already said, I finished it really quickly. If I'm properly into a book I take it into the loo, read it standing up while cooking, take it with me in the car so I can read it while I'm waiting for the kids to come out of school.....then I'm all disappointed when I've finished :(

joanofarchitrave · 21/12/2013 00:49

Children of the Sun. Unexpectedly loved it. One of those books you read until 8.29am and then grab it again at 5.01pm.

JingleJohnsJulie · 27/12/2013 17:21

The Marrying of Chani Kaufman.
