My sister recommended a book but can't remember the title or who wrote it. Hmm

It is about a girl growing up but the style gets gradually weirder and a bit creepy and then it turns out the narrator is actually a man trying to write as the girl - and failing.

It sounds v interesting and would help with some research I'm doing for something else, so any ideas gratefully received!

Would like to add my sister knows my MN name - the 'hmm' face looks a bit harsh now and should be more eye rolly (frantically back-tracks)!

I've no idea I'm afraid, but if you find out elsewhere will you please come back and tell me? That sounds really interesting!

Long shot - Sophie's World by Jastein Gaarder?

ghostonthecanvas · 01/10/2013 20:33

It could be Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn?

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 01/10/2013 20:34

Why can't you ask your sister? Confused

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 01/10/2013 20:34

Oh sorry, she can't remember Blush

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 01/10/2013 20:36

Gone Girl isn't someone growing up exactly though is it? It's not how I would remember the book.

Really have no idea, sorry.

Clawdy · 01/10/2013 20:40

And Gone Girl doesn't involve a man writing as a woman. Bit of a puzzle.

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 01/10/2013 20:42

Oh no It doesn't does it. Does have an unreliable narrator or two. But still very wide of the mark.

ghostonthecanvas · 01/10/2013 20:43

Ffs. Now I need to figure out what book I meant! Going to trawl through my bookcase. Annoyed with myself!

AmandaPandtheNightmareMonsters · 01/10/2013 20:44

Does your sister remember whether this is a modern novel, or something older? A recent release?

Can she remember where she got it - if she picked it up on Amazon or at the library she may be able to look back on her records. If it was an impulse purchase at a station, it was probably a bestseller, making it easier to track down.

Hello again. Definitely not Gone Girl but thanks for suggestions! She says it's a contemporary novel but not a recent best seller. I've had a look through the suggestions for book clubs on goodreads.com but can't see anything that looks like it.

She thought the title was something like 'the girl in the red dress' but again I can't find anything that looks likely called that.

Oh well, perhaps she'll remember some day!

Not Sophie's World either; we both read that a while ago and talked about it at the time.
