Snow White Must Die by Nele Neuhaus - the power of translators

Wondering what others have thought of this novel set in Germany? It has LOTS of positive reviews on the internet, 3 million copies sold, and it's on Richard and Judy's 2013 Autumn list. I just couldn't go with the positives because I felt the translator (who incidentally I believe translated Stieg Larsson) killed the author's European voice (ie gratingly American) and had some shockers on the translation front like: 'swearing a blue streak' and 'it was the absolute maximum credible accident'.
It's interesting to consider the power a translator can have and how they can make /break a novel... your thoughts?
