Who's your favourite fictional detective?

Jack Caffrey

And good old cheap beer drinking, football loving, curry eating Tom Thorne.

Who's your favourite? And if I like those two, what else might I enjoy?

Marcus Didius Falco (sarcastic and tough)
John Rebus (Sarcastic, cynical, on the side of the angels nonetheless. I always thought Ken Stott was pretty close to my idea of Rebus)
Charlie Parker (witty, soulful and great taste in music)
Salvo Montalbano (shouting, gesticulation, great suits, interesting radical past)
Richard Castle (because of Nathan Fillion)
I used to like Temperance Brennan a lot for her testiness and cleverness but I think the series has 'gone off'

Lynsey Boxer
Harry Bosch

Hercule Poirot, with Miss Marple a very close second. nobody has ever written mysteries as good as Agatha Christie's. Superintendant Battle is very good too, a pity she didn't write more about him.

Inspector Hemingway in Georgette Heyer's mysteries is a great character too.

Tom Thorne all the way. He never fails to make me gasp with his naughtiness and he's also a bit of a rubbish detective as he doesn't work it all out until very late in the day. I love his drunken chats with Hendricks who I've recently nominated as my new gay best friend as there was a vacancy!

A vote also for Carrigan and Miller - a newish pairing from Stav Sherez. The stories can get a bit bogged down in foreign politics, but I'm liking these two grumpy (Carrigan) and workaholic (Miller) newbies.

Did anyone say Dave Robicheaux? James Lee Burke novels set in Louisiana. Would strongly recommend him to all the Charlie Parker Fans.

Hercule Poirot followed by Miss Jane Marple. Agatha is the undisputed queen.

I can't put them in order, but Philip Marlowe, Lord Peter Wimsey, Albert Campion and Kinsey Millhone are my choices. I also love Poirot and Miss Marple, especially as portrayed by Joan Hickson, and I'm currently reading my first John Connolly, and finding Charlie Parker intriguing.

motherinferior · 08/11/2013 18:22

She's not strictly a detective but I would love to be mates with Ruth Galloway. I think we'd get on.

I am very fond of Myron Bolitar. Also being friends with him would mean you always had his scary mates to back you up.

Joe Pickett is a sweetie, though suspect we'd disagree politically.
