Who's your favourite fictional detective?

Thurlow · 13/09/2013 14:36

Jack Caffrey

And good old cheap beer drinking, football loving, curry eating Tom Thorne.

Who's your favourite? And if I like those two, what else might I enjoy?

Poirot
Rebus
Morse/Lewis

dappledawn · 16/09/2013 13:25

Henri Castang, Van der Valk, and of course Wallander.

PrimalLass · 16/09/2013 21:14

Rebus and Jackson Brodie because they are about home and thereabouts. Also anything by Harlan Coben.

Kasterborous · 17/09/2013 21:40

Kinsey Millhone, she is in Sue Grafton's 'alphabet' books, she's a really likeable character. If you like them there are 23 books in the series so far so plenty to keep you going. There is one for each letter of the alphabet starting with A is for Alibi up to W is for Wasted. So three left to go.

pointythings · 17/09/2013 22:06

Lord Peter Wimsey
Carson Ryder
V.I Warshawski
Cadfael

At last, someone who knows who Caffery is! Honestly the fittest fictional character ever created. I don't know how she does it, but he is sex on legs.

Flea Marley can bugger off though. I HATE that character.

Have you read all the books? Have you read the knew one, Poppet?

Falco, Precious Ramotswe, Adam Dalgleish and Guido Brunetti.

I can't help but think Flea is a sort of imaginary version of Hayder.

I liked Poppet, I thought it was a bit of a return to form but it almost wasn't a Caffery book and would have worked as well without him (sad as I would have been). The first two were the best, Ritual was ok, Skin and Gone weren't too good imo.

Philip Marlowe. He's such a broken character.

And no Walking Man, despite apparently being in the Walking Man series. She should have just done it as a standalone, it would have been fine.

Am actually re-reading Birdman and The Treatment now, so much better.

They just weren't as creepy. Though I'm probably biased as I actually lived in Tulse Hill and could see Brockwell Park from my living window when I read The Treatment. Scared me witless!

Any other good books like Hayder/Caffery?

Poirot

Tom Barnaby in midsummer murders

Sherlock Holmes

ShootMeNowPlease · 19/09/2013 17:30

Lord Peter Wimsey (and Sherlock Holmes, but only if played by Jeremy Brett - BC doesn't do much for me).

Someone asked upthread if there were any adaptations of the Wimsey books: there are, with Edward Petherbridge as Wimsey and Harriet Walter as Harriet Vane. Strong Poison and Have His Carcase are good, Gaudy Night (which is my favourite of all the books) is sadly rubbish, and significantly less feminist than the original.

Thurlow · 19/09/2013 17:37

Thanks LaQueen, will try them!

Falco obviously! Surprised not more mentions...

(and loving Flavia Albia)

Sherlock Holmes a close second.

woodchuck · 27/09/2013 23:28

I love John Rebus
Jack Reacher
Jack Cafferey
And for a real blast from the past 'Duke de Richleau' from Dennis Wheatley, not a detective as such but did a lot of detecting. Yet always had time for a fine Bordeaux and a dabble with the Dark Arts

I enjoyed Poppet but felt it was missing the element of surprise of Hayder's other books. the best IMO was Pig Island. So weird. I'm not sure where Hayder is taking this series. It started off so well, but the Flea and Caffrey characters seem like they are two seperate novels spliced together. You know, like Lord of the Rings, where Frodo and Sam were so far off the exciting page of the other characters, they ended up in their own books

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 28/09/2013 00:11
