Anyone read Stoner by John Williams? apparently a neglected masterpiece. Wondered about choosing it for next Book Group choice as it's my turn.

It is lovely book. However, the characters make you want to shake them sometimes, so I think it would be good for a bookgroup as you could have plenty of discussions about how he handles things in his life (such as his affair)and the protrayal of his wife and daughter. I could not put it down - it kind of put me in mind of a male version of a Dorothy Whipple novel.

I finished this yesterday! I bought it after hearing it being raved about on The Today programme earlier in the summer. Agree with janesnowdon1 about the shakeability of the characters but it really is a lovely book - great for discussion.

It's wonderful! Very gripping indeed. Some of it, particularly the end, is so beautifully written it took my breath. Yes come to think of it the end is the best bit... Great choice for a book group.

Thanks, think I will go ahead and choose it. Smile

I loved it. It's heartbreaking in places and there is a bit early on which is so cringeworthy you can't look directly at it.
