Hard work!

Struggling with it

emkana · 11/06/2006 22:19

There's been quite a few threads about it already.

dinosaure · 11/06/2006 22:20

Persevere. It gets better. And then it gets - well - devastating.

Beetroot · 11/06/2006 22:20

how you feeling?

OP posts:
moondog · 11/06/2006 22:20

Was aboutto say the same Emkana.
It seems to pop up every week.

spacedonkey · 11/06/2006 22:21

It blew me away

emkana · 11/06/2006 22:21

I feel okay, thank you. Smile

Just did a quick search on the archives search, there's about five threads about this.

MissChief · 11/06/2006 22:22

emkana · 11/06/2006 22:22

Lionel Shriver, yes.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/06/2006 22:22

loved this book. incredibly thought provoking imo.

don't care if she's never had kids (dh hated that) she has interesting things to say.

stick with it beetroot.

MissChief · 11/06/2006 22:23

Hi emkana - hope you're okay - i was 12 days late 2nd time, if that's any consolation!

Beetroot · 11/06/2006 22:24

trouble they contain spoilers , have just glanced.

It si the neverending horridness that I find exhausting. And you know it cannot have a goodending

MissChief · 11/06/2006 22:24

I read some interviews with her - thought she was brave in tackling this taboo but seemed a little too stridnet/precious about it for my liking. maybe i should try the book.

emkana · 11/06/2006 22:24

Hi MissChief! Smile
Only four days so far, so shouldn't get too worked up yet, I guess.

Beetroot, I liked the book and thought it was very powerful and thought-provoking.

Beetroot · 11/06/2006 22:24

btw I was 12 days later with two of mine!

OP posts:
Fillyjonk · 11/06/2006 22:28

no, i did not like it

in fact, i wanted very much to burn it Shock

emkana · 11/06/2006 22:29

Why didn't you like it?

I didn't like the narrator at all, but still thought it was a book that really draws you in.

FillyjonktheFluffy · 11/06/2006 22:33

I dunno, I found it really disturbing and cold...also I do think the authors experiences are relevant...when someone writes a book they are telling you about how they see the world, really. And the author pees me off no end.

I do think it was well written but that kind of made it worse.

Beetroot · 12/06/2006 10:44

i am drawn to it and drawn in by it but find it a challenge to read..it is exhausting

honeybunny · 12/06/2006 20:29

Ploughed through this on holiday and glad I did but it was a bit of a struggle. Not an enjoyable read, but then nor is the subject. Unputdownable though.

PanicPants · 12/06/2006 20:33

I really enjoyed it. (well, enjoyed isn't the right word iuswim) I was pregnant at the time and it terrified me.

It's really moving, and I could relate to her, at least at the beginning when she was pregnant.

Keep going with it. It's one of those books that'll keep going round in your mind long after you've finished it

Twiglett · 12/06/2006 20:34

its crap, predictable, with poor characterisation imo

PanicPants · 12/06/2006 20:36

Oh didn't realise the author had never had children.

Not sure how I feel about that Shock

dinny · 12/06/2006 20:39

I read it and really liked it but also felt diffently when realised how anti-child he apparently is.

psychomum5 · 12/06/2006 20:39

I enjoyed it, once i managed to get into it. took a while tho, but I persevered as I had heard from friends that had read it that it was worth reading. I did start to guess at the ending tho towards the end, and by my standards I was very good and didn't read the end till I got there. (I am a very bad lady in that I often will get so agitated half way thro a book that I need to know that things will turn out ok so 'cheat'Blush) flameboo gets very cross with me for that:(

good book tho and would recomend:)

brimfull · 12/06/2006 20:39

I enjoyed it
