Am planning to immerse myself in Waterstones tomorrow to buy some books for my hols... I like Paulina Simons, Susan Hill, John Irving ...favourite book ever is either Precious Bane or A Prayer for Owen Meany... anybody got any recommendations ? ( do not want anything with fairies, wimpy kids or Mr Gum inSmile)

Owen Meany is in my top five (but then again it should be in everybody's), so I have also loved

The Woman in White - Wilkie Collins
Fingersmith - Sarah Waters
The Book Thief - Marcus Zusak
Cold Comfort Farm - Stella Gibbons

and my mind has just gone totally blank, it must be the wine heat

Over my recent holidays I read and loved The Last Ride by Thomas Eidson (cowboys and injuns!) and The Sparrow by Maria Doria Russell which was sci fi, a genre that I don't usually read.

If you liked Fingersmith, have you read Affinity? Or if you fancy something heavy what about The Quincunx by Charles Palliser, there were loads of threads about it on here a couple of years back.

I've also just wasted a good few hours of my life reading The Age of Miracles - that was a short story pretending to be a novel.

The Observations by Jane Harris. Very original and entertaining.
