I'm halfway through this, and loving it. Anyone else want to chat about it?

I recently read and really enjoyed it. Not sure if you should be reading opinions about it before you reach the end though, as you are likely to get spoilers.

What Cote said. Grin

I've not long finished it - come back when you've read it all.

Finished! [speed reader]

Really enjoyed it, but can't work out if the literary allusions are dazzlingly clever or just pretentious, if Haley is McEwan, and if the ending is realistic (not the reveal, more whether or not he would have forgiven her - trying to be vague to avoid spoilers!). Am also not sure of Shirley's role in it all - she seemed a bit forced, apart from a character contrast with Serena, perhaps, and a literary device so that the ending works.

It is the story as it happened so Shirley is a real person rather than a fictional character. Haley is the author of the book, not Serena. She must have forgiven her & they must have ended up together for the book to have been published. That is my understanding anyway.

BeingMoreDog · 30/07/2013 18:05

Yep, I got the Haley bit, but SPOILER ALERT

Shirley seemed a bit random as a character. I guess she would have given Haley lots of info about Serena to enable him to write.

Isn't that life, though? With random characters in it?

hackmum · 31/07/2013 17:32

I enjoyed it, but the ending made me really cross. Ian McEwan and his bloody tricksy endings.

whatwoulddexterdo · 31/07/2013 19:37

I thought this ws dull, dull dull. Really disappointing as i was really looking forward to it.

3/4 through....and enjoying it. Comments above too cryptic to spoil it for me.
