Help! Name this book.

Have been Googling to no avail - can't remember the title or author of a book...

It's about a woman married to the headacher of a public boys' school. The woman is the 'perfect wife' but being abused - eventually fights back and kills him. Sent to prison, disowned by children. Key scene which keeps playing in my head is when a friend believes the abuse she endured as he watched her at a dinner party being pinched in a mirror.

Any ideas? It's doing my head in!

It's not Freefall by William Golding is it? A book about a man who falls hopelessly in love with a woman who marries someone else who then turns out to be abusive to her. I think he was a headmaster. Read it years ago, so can't remember the exact details. Don't remember he rmurdering him either.

Yes - it's good. The front cover is very deceiving - it's much more interesting than I expected. Was trying to recommend to a friend today and just had a total blank!
