Slightly spoilery but not at all surprising and it's within the first 1/5 of the book. (I haven't finished the book yet)
You want your character to break up with her fiance.
So you make him rape her.
Really? Really?
You can't just have her realise that they want different things (which was about to happen anyway).
Or have her realise that she's 19 and it's the 21st century?
Or have her decide to go on her trip whether he likes it or not, and the breaking up can happen naturally?
Very poor use of rape-as-drama. As far as I can tell the rape has served no purpose other than to break them up. It hasn't affected how she's behaved or what she has thought since. So what was the point?
