Angelmaker by nick harkaway

This is very darkly funny.

Inspector Montalbano or Dr. Siri books (murder mysteries) are good beach holiday series.

Bel Canto or State of Wonder by Ann Patchett

The Restraint of Beasts by Magnus Mills

Restless by William Boyd

The Observations by Jane Harris (it's set in the past but it's not a historical novel iykwim)
