Please tell me someone has read this! Have just finished it and need to discuss. It's ages since I've read a book that I literally just couldn't put down. I spent all day thinking about when I could get back to my book. Would love to hear what others think.

Me! I read it. Found it compelling too and yet flawed somehow as well. Hesitant as don't want to give away spoilers. What did you think of the ending?

Kenanddreary · 01/06/2013 12:50

I really liked the ending Cantdo.

SPOILER ALERT.....

It didn't end like a fairy tale which would have been ridiculous and unrealistic because so much had happened and to them as a family and there were obviously a LOT of issues to sort out. But I really liked the fact that there was hope for them again that they would move house, settle the children somewhere (yet again) and get back together as a couple. I didn't get the feeling that they had ever fallen out of love but that it was a set of circumstances which had pushed them apart.

What did you think of the incident with Max? Did you think it was realistic? Totally shocking of course and I did wonder whether Jane had a moral duty to go to the police to try to stop him doing it again (which he already obviously had done with Lydia).

I didn't think Melanie was as toxic as she could have been. The blurb gave the impression that she was going to be very dangerous but in fact she wasn't too bad IMO. And I was very annoyed with Jane most of the time for moving such a ridiculous distance from her husband's workplace in the first place!! Expecting him to commute 2 hours each way. How selfish!!

SPOILER ALERT

I found the incident with Max had been signposted from a while before it happened so I wasn't that surprised - agree entirely about the police though.

Oh and I also found the ending sort of plausible - but sort of not, because I wonder how they could cope together after everything that had happened.

Melanie wasn't that bad, I agree. Different, yes, irresponsible, but not really toxic, not until her son was in question and that was more than plausible. And if she was using Jane, then Jane was also using her.

I really enjoyed the book....
