Help me remember this book please

I read this book on honeymoon, it was from the 'resort library'... I was thinking about it the other day and think I would love to re-read it but remember very little about it, the author or what it was called.

It was set in India, late 19th/early 18th century. About 2 british women who were married to men who worked out there (might have been army officers?) but the 2 women lived far apart so mainly wrote to each other, although I do remember a train journey in the novel, I remember little else except really enjoying it.

Help please?

It's not The Far Cry by Emma Smith, is it?

Or Heat and Dust by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, although this has a modern-day strand so is probably not the one.

Off to google those 3... Fingers crossed!

I'm not sure... Out of all of then east of the sun looks most familiar and the publication date matches our honeymoon extremely well.

But I'm a whole century out and there's a 3rd girl. Hhmmm I do quite like the look of it so might get it anyway and start reading see if it's the one!
