No... I'm thinking about it though, is it good?

Yes. Trudged through it for a local bookgroup. By the end I was glad I'd read it but I found it an irritating read!

The opening bit is based around where I lived so I bought it recently. My bf is reading it first and there are a fair few inaccuracies and details that don't quite make sense that have really annoyed him.

Having said that I have several friends who have loved it so I suppose it depends what you're wanting to get out of it. I'll read it just for a bit of light reading before my next book group book.

yellow my sentiments exactly. There was ine bit right at the end where he talked about his fear of dementia which I found moving the rest left me cold.

It was the Mumsnet Book of the Month for January. There was a Webchat with the author and huge discussion about this book with over 200 posts. Look under the "Book of the Month" thread. It was very interesting !

I loved it, well, 4 out of 5 loved it. Yes, it was frustrating and irritating but I think that was the point! We were "on the journey", often going backwards, with Harold... Our book club talked more about that book than any other we have ever read!!!

I am reading it now. Only just started but I'm enjoying it so far.

Really? Didn't get rated much in ours. I. Hink I didn't like the style -each chapter felt like a radio play episode, lots of recapping. Lots of very random unnecessary tangents. It really irritated me that he didn't buy or take up the offer of proper shoes.

The characters just didn't seem very real. I found the various women interesting with potential to explore interesting themes there which then didn't happen.

Quite an odd ending too.

I just finished it last night. I gave it 4/5. It only really got me interested when I was about 80% through it. It frustrated me with how slow it was up until that point.

The end was good, though.

Our thoughts were: A languorous read that will transport you to a ruminative place, but will frustrate readers who like a fast-paced book.

As others say, it has something about it that makes you reflect, although in can be almost interminably slow in parts.

Really enjoyed this one ! sorry no book club so just wanted to share with people who have read it, loved the characters and like someone else on this thread, cried at the end, had to stop wishing he would get walking boots as it was annoying me and I realised that probably was the point about half way through!

I really loved it - I think it helps if you have some knowledge of theology as there are lots of interesting motifs in there.

I thought it was very profound - that almost nothing else matters in life apart from simple connections with other people. That reaching out in small ways can make a difference. And that above all, when alka said and done what you will remember in life is the relationships with your family.

What Valdeeves said! I thought it was great.

I spent the first 3/4 thinking it was over rated, but it had me in tears in the end. Am glad I finished it.
