The Chemistry of Tears by Peter Carey

Anyone else read this recently? I have become stumped, about 7/8 of the way through, which is bizarre as I usually only stump at the start of things and give up / discard / move on. But its like the story has run aground, stalled, lost focus. Anyone else, or is it just me?

I gave up around half way through - and don't often do that either. I did intend to go back to it - but feels too long ago now. I know I really liked the modern part of the story but not the earlier one. Can't remember much else...

Thank god its not just me. It became due back at the library so I just returned it unfinished and have no desire to find out the ending - I should feel guilt but don't.
