How much does your reading overlap with that of your DH/DP?

Just that, really. Both of us read loads, but totally different genres, only occasionally will one of us read a novel the other has.

Is it the same with you, or do you have the same tastes?

Very little overlap, but he overlaps a lot with DS1 (nearly 13). The last thing DH and I both read was The Hunger Games trilogy.

Viewofthehills · 23/01/2013 21:52

We're the same. Overlap on a few thrillers (desperate holiday reading). Apart from that he reads maths, I read history. I read a wide range of fiction... he reads maths!

ThreeBeeOneGee · 23/01/2013 21:54

In theory, we both enjoy science fiction and post-apocalyptic / dystopian stuff, but he likes zombies and YA fiction more than I do. I'm currently reading When She Woke by Hillary Jordan, which he wouldn't touch with a bargepole.

webwiz · 23/01/2013 21:54

We overlap quite a bit - if I've read something I think he'll enjoy I'll pass it on and vice versa. We both have kindles that are linked to the same account so we'll both often read the same thing.

He wouldn't read any of the trashy chick lit that I sometimes read though and I don't want to read any autobiographies of footballers so we agree to differ on those Smile

HumphreyCobbler · 23/01/2013 21:58

Dh doesn't read as much as I do but is happy to read anything that is good. I tell him what is good. He has excellent taste, he always agrees with me Grin

He does read the newspaper from cover to cover every day though, unlike me

Schooldidi · 23/01/2013 22:02

Dp doesn't read much other than bedtime stories for dd2. Apparently he used to read a lot when he was younger but got out of the habit for some reason. What he says he used to read would overlap quite a bit as we both like science fiction/fantasy.

I overlap quite a lot with dd1. That used to be so I could check the books she wanted to read were suitable but now it's because she's just into the same sort of books as I am and asks me if I think a certain series is good, although she still asks if there's too much sex stuff in books for her.

bigbadbarry · 23/01/2013 22:06

We overlap a bit except I read loads more than him (50 books last year compared to his 10.) He likes biographies of rock stars, I don't like biographies full stop. Novels, we overlap.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 23/01/2013 22:14

We probably overlap about 80%. It's handy because we can discuss the books afterwards although at the moment it's a bit tense because I'm reading book 6 of the Game of Thrones series and he's only on book 2 and I keep accidently giving the plotline away Grin

Arcticwaffle · 24/01/2013 12:19

Not a lot. He likes Terry Pratchett, dragon-based fantasy (Anne McCaffrey) etc. I will read a bit of Terry Pratchett but it all seems the same to me. We have a bit of overlap on science fiction and detective stories, but it's minimal.

We like different films, music, TV etc too. Luckily I have friends to talk to about books, go to the cinema with etc, it is easier for babysitting too.

DP is nothing like my imagined ideal man :-)

EllieQ · 24/01/2013 12:27

Quite a bit - we both read sf and fantasy, but he reads more military-sf than I, and I read quite a bit of YA/ dystopia sf that he doesn't. There are several authors we're both fans of, and I have found him sneakily reading the first chapter of a new book by one of our faves while I'm halfway through!

iseenodust · 24/01/2013 13:04

Barely. He reads Bernard Cornwall, Any McNab etc. When we do cross it's because I've read a thriller he may like eg introduced him to Nelson DeMille.

myalias · 24/01/2013 13:08

Totally different tastes I love pschological crime thrillers he love fantasy science fiction.

BirdyArms · 24/01/2013 13:19

We used to overlap a lot more before we had kindles. When we used to go on holiday we would both read the same books and in a bookshop we would try to find things that we both wanted to read. But now dh is an undisciplined kindle buyer and mostly reads history books, I am still reading the literary fiction stuff that I've always read.

Parisbanana · 24/01/2013 14:32

It's very rare we read the same stuff, not even similar genres.
I read fiction, and occasionally biographies (usually of 80s pop stars Grin)
Dh reads a lot of non fiction and biographies, mostly of cyclists or arctic explorers.
The only author we both read is Jonathan Coe.

IndridCold · 24/01/2013 17:35

Quite a lot, which is just as well or we wouldn't be able to get into the house for books!

I think I spend more time reading and keep more up to date with new fiction, and I do most of the book buying. Before we met he read a lot of science fiction and never read a book written by women Hmm. Now I've got him reading Hilary Mantel!

flubba · 24/01/2013 18:13

Not much - he should read more of what I read because I'm right, and very occasionally he will choose is forced to read something I've raved about. He's just read The Help after my pestering and enjoyed it. Hurrah!

My last few books were The Help, Enigma, Carré's Murder of Quality and Vanished.
His was 'Bad Pharma' (factual about dodgy pharmaceutical companies) and he'll choose maths books etc to read too if given the choice Hmm . :o
