Is "The Witches" by Roald Dahl to scary for a 4 and 6 year old?

They loved The Twits, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Magic Finger, James and the Giant Peach.

I got "The Witches" from the library, but from what I remember it is a bit scary. What do you think?

I thought mine would be frightened by Fantastic Mr Fox and they weren't (and mine are real scaredy cats!)

actually, thinking back - the parents die early on - that's probably the bit that might freak them out (if they don't like that sort of thing)

I think it may be too scary for a 4 year old but depends on the temperamant of your child.

I think I'll give it a try. 4yr old is generally tougher than her big brother I did let them warch Ahrry Potter () the other night and they were a bit scared, but okay.

My ds watches HP, but was too scared by The Witches...however, that could be because dh put a scary voice on when reading it!

Read the first chapter. Dd did seem a bit scared, but I think she was putting it on! I kept reminding them that it is just a story, that these "REAL WITCHES" are, of course, not real witches!

My (soft) 6 year old loved it. Don't think she wuold have done at 4 but if your 4yo is quite tough, should be OK.

My son is seven and has seen all the Harry Potters, Star Wars etc. He found the Witches ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. Sorry! But it really frightened him and his friend of the same age.

I don't remember being scared by it, don't know how old i was. Funny thing is, i grew up without a telly and have always been a wimp when it comes to televisual feasts. on the other hand, my boyf whose childhood was tv/film-oriented was scared by The Witches book but handled Alien quite easily at a ridiculously young age!
