good series of books for DH who loves a good epic.

He's finished Game of Thrones and loved it, and has previously enjoyed LOTR. I didn't like both (couldn't get past 1st chapter of GoT although I did plod through middle earth until the bitter end) so I can't really judge what he might like, just that it probably needs to have millions of characters, span years and have some kind of ridiculous fantasy element. Anyone help? I'd love to get him a new collection for christmas.

Wheel of time ? I haven't started it myself but it has been highly recommended on here and in rl,
I am in the same predicament as your DH, but have started reading GoT from the beginning again.

I'm not sure sorry, but just wanted to say... skip the first chapter of GoT and move onto the second. The first chapter is like the first chapter of Harry Potter adn the Goblet of Fire imo - it took me years to be able to read that and understand wtf was going on. .

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King?

Rivens husband- mark ravendale? Rivendale? Will look it up later has written a well received, but very grim fantasy. Called prince of thorns.

I enjoyed got. Couldn't get into wheel of time but both dh and myself loved the sword of truth series beginning with wizards first rule. It's something like 7 or 8 good thick volumes.

I second the Wheel of Time. Very involved multi-threaded storylines.

Can't wait for the last one next year.

The Riftwar saga by Raymond E Feist (starts with Magician, Silverthorn, then A Darkness at Sethanon) - an oldie but a goodie!

Or The Black Magician series by Trudi Canavan?

Iain m banks sci fi culture series? Very in depth books, as are GoT.

Robin Hobb - The Farseer trilogy, beginning with Assassins Apprentice.

Fitz is one of my all time favourite fictional characters, pretty sure it fits the bill for all of his requirements (and with a further six or so books about the same realm/characters that he can carry on with if he likes the first trilogy...in fact, I think she's still writing some!)

David Eddings - The Belgariad, The Tamuli and well there are a few.

The Boudica series by Manda Scott is excellent. I bought the series for my brother (another game of thrones fan) after having enjoyed them so much myself and he was bereft when they had finished.

My Dh also loves these sorts of fantasy books, ideally with plenty of killing in them! And is just finishing the Game of Thrones set.

His favourite author is David Gemmell.
Mr Gemmell kindly wrote quite a lot of sweeping series of books.
The Drenai books - starting with Legend (9 books)
The Damned books - starting with White Wolf (2 books)
The Jon Shannon books - starting with Wolf in Shadow (3 books)
The Stones of Power books - starting with Ghost King (4 books)
The Hawk Queen books - starting with Ironhand's daughter (2 books)
The Rigante books - starting with Sword in the Storm (4 books)
Troy - starting with Lord of the Silver Bow (2 books)
And then four individual titles.

He also likes Simon Scarrow. And a book called Orcs by Stan Nicholls.

I love Robin Hobb's Farseer Series too. Fitz is great!

Kate Elliot's Crown of Stars series is epic

Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series is also quite epic adventure, young lad coming of age.

Those were the memorable of the epic series I've read... not including some that appeal to the female market [Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel Series is brilliant, if you don't mind sex with your political intrigue]

I beg to differ Kelle - Fitz is a boring whiny bugger but he is surrounded by interesting people who make the books great.

Wheel of Time is definitely epic! I am re-reading now in preparation for the final book coming out in January.

I must admit to it being a long time ago when I read them, I haven't got around to reading the latest series [Tawny Man] though they are on my shelves, I just have way too many books that keep jumping the queue.

Wheel of time is epic. I've got quite a few of those on my to be read shelves, I like to read a series in a run, so may take a break and stash them until I get a chance to have a marathon session.

Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever by Stephen R. Donaldson

Robin Hobb breakdown:
Assassin - good. Liveship - good. Tawny man - very good (but only if you have read Assassin books)
Soldier son - awful
Dragon ones - meh

Can't be doing with a lot of fantasy and thought GOT (have read the first two) was badly written tripe, but love LOTR.

King's Dark Tower series is fantasy without the stupid names and one dimensional characters.
