for EHmum.

A good read if you ask me, but ever so ever so morbid. It was one of those books I had to finish, but also which I read fairly slowly. And felt rather let down by it in the end. anyone else?

only book I've ever read twice in a row. as soon as i finished it, i HAD to read it again - one of my all times faves. her use of language & building of tension are incredible. once tried explaining to a pupil of mine what it's about - so not possible!

I thought it was a bloke!

I loved it too, but read it too long ago to be say why. Not very good at remembering books.

I agree with SP, I felt let down by it, a big "so what?" at the end.

Isn't the ending meant to be a metaphor for the healing process? All outsiders would view the family relationships as warped and twisted, which is why they interfere so much, but when left alone they come together & heal each other. Don't know a lot of detail about indian history, but isn't it all a metaphor for western intervention in other countries, as well as an inditement of the caste system & religion? I know Roy has given up writing to dedicate her life to campaining against westernisation. Sorry, this is long, i could talk about this book all day. Smile

Loved it. Read and re-read many times.

I prefer endings to be a bit ambiguous TBH.

It's one of the few books I've given up on before the end. I just didn't connect with it at all.
