Holiday planned for Morocco next year and would like to get DH (and myself!) some books for Christmas with this as a theme.

I am interested in anything either set in Morocco (or North Africa), or written by local authors. Thanks!

I really enjoyed Hideous Kinky, an account of Esther Freud's childhood in Morocco. Easy read and very descriptive of the places she visited.

We can suggest these set in Morocco - lots to keep you going!

A Handful of Honey by Annie Hawes

A House in Fez by Susanna Clark

Comfort and Joy by India Knight (Part set in Morocco) and it's Christmassy

Crossed Bones by Jane Johnson (Part set)

The Book of Madness and Cures by Regina O'Melveny (Part set)

The Final Bet by Abdelilah Hamdouchi

The Last Resort by Carmen Posadas

The Salt Road by Jane Johnson (part set)

The Seamstress by Maria Duenas (part set)

The Sultan's Wife by Jane Johnson (Part set)

The best one is The Sheltering Sky, Paul Bowles

Although it might alarm you a bit...

Actually Just remembered I have some really good books by a Moroccan, Mohammed Choukri, that are worth reading.

The Cairo Trilogy by Naguib Mahfouz is fantastic (not quite Morocco but it's still North Africa!). Lots of colour, characters, culture, intrigue and lurve.

I second 'hideous kinky', the film is also worth watching too.

Thank you everyone. What a great list - I'm now spoilt for choice! Just hope we get enough time to read our way through all your recommendations.
