Is anyone else reading/has read this?

I am reading it at the moment - over half way through. I wasn't sure at first but it is strangely intriguing. Not my normal genre at all but I'm enjoying it Smile.

Would love to hear what others think about the story.

I've read it. Smile

I thought it was very romantic, almost a fairytale for adults. It took me a while to get into to it aswell. I wasn't sure at all initially.

I loved it. Compelling and beautifully written. It reminded me of 'The End of Mr Y' for some reason.

I enjoyed the first half and the last half dragged. But I think I'm quite strange as everyone else seemed to love it.

Onlyaphase · 21/11/2012 18:46

Loved it, as Ali said, a fairytale for grown ups. Reminded me of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell

Yes - a fairytale for grown-ups. That's a perfect description! There's also a lot of mystery. Does it all get explained at the end?

Is it as well-written as Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell?

Colyngbourne · 22/11/2012 08:06

I think it started with a good concept and story-telling but lost its way somewhere in the middle and became quite repetitive (in a very floaty way) and essentially "not going anywhere". I like my beautiful description to be grounded in some decent plot and world-building and this doesn't do it IMO.It didn't deserve the ravings when it was published but the cover is very pretty!

JS & MN is leagues beyond it.

I found it to be all icing and no cake.

The love story felt pat and lifeless and there was very little attention to period detail.

And the big question? Spoiler alert

If you can do that much magic - why on earth are you mucking about with a circus? Surely there would be much more useful and challenging things to do with your powers?
