Ok, so i know that u can't apparate/disapparate anywhere in the grounds of Hogwarts BUT why can Dobby and Kreacher apparate in the Gryfinddor common room when they are reporting back to Harry about where Malfoy has been?

Because you can get away with anything in books and people hope you don't notice. Grin

MerlinsBeard · 29/03/2006 12:10

It would mean that Elf magic is more powerful than Wizard magic which isn't possible or else Elves would have the upper hand and wouldn't be slaves. I think it is definitley an over sight.

fuzzywuzzy · 29/03/2006 12:15

I think elves have a different kind of magic from wizards, which is why.
Are you sure he apparated??? Been a while since I last read hp and the half blood prince, my boss has borrowed my copy, and I think his children may have borrowed it from him.

gibberish · 29/03/2006 12:24

Dd1 says elves are more powerful than wizards but have to obey them (unless they have been 'freed' by being given an item of clothing).

As clear as mud.

House Elves have to be able to do it or they can't be efficient servants.

MrsMaple · 30/03/2006 09:31

Have an idea that what you can't do is apparate/disapparate INTO or OUT OF Hogwarts - Dumbledore's ring of steel as it were - but can presumably disapparate within the building if you've passed the test and are a sprightly house-elf type or a teacher.

Flamesparrow · 30/03/2006 09:38

Yup - I think MrsM is probably right, or its written into the elves' contract so that they can work faster.

Did they mention it in OOP when they were taking the apparating lessons? I've got in my mind that the hall magic had to be altered to allow it, so that screws up the MrsM theory....

MoM - just read and enjoy.... don't make me come do starey face at you!

Flip · 30/03/2006 09:42

Isn't Fawkes able to disapporate with Dumbledore and Harry?

But I remember reading that when they were doing their apparte practise that dumbledore had lifted the ring around the hall so they could apparte within the great hall. Is that wrong? If that was the case it would mean you couldn't apparate anywhere within Hogwarts unless dumbledore allowed it.

Scrumpty · 30/03/2006 13:06

HOUSE ELVES MUST BE MORE POWERFUL THAN WIZARDS, BECAUSE IN COS, WHEN HP FREES DOBBY, DOBBY KNOCKS LUCIUS MALFOY FLAT ON HIS BACK!

MerlinsBeard · 30/03/2006 13:15

oooh yes thats right he (Dobby)does! they know some pretty powerful magic don't they.

Yes dubmledore lifted the "ring of non aparation" for the lessons.

next question.....

Grin

Now that Dumbledore is...u know.... will all the protection charms/spells etc be lifted like th spell was that he performed on Harry at the top of the tower?

and

When does the next one come out??!!!Grin

expatinscotland · 30/03/2006 13:31

Scrumpty,
No offense, but please turn your caps lock off. It's the online equivalent of shouting.

Scrumpty · 30/03/2006 13:45

I do apologise for that but i'm in such an idle mood, that I can't be bothered to keep pressing The shift key!

Miaou · 30/03/2006 15:34

Of course you can apparate and disapparate within Hogwarts. How else would you practise for and pass your apparition test?? Wink

saltire · 30/03/2006 19:19

mumofmonsters
apparently any secrets .ie the secret of where the HQ of the order of the Phoenix is all die with the person holding them. But i think that the protection Harry gets while staying with the Dursleys ends when he reaches adulthood
And apparently Elves have a different kind of magic to wizards. You can tell i brpwse HP websites can't you, does that make me sad?

Was discussing with DH last night - he is sure it is some houseelf clause to make them more efficient.

We think probabaly the hogwarts charms are done by several wizards at a time, so they just need restrengthening when one dies, or every time a headmaster died, they'd be completely exposed.

Of course Dumbledore could have lifted the spell on Harry silently, still be alive, and the spell issue not be a problem.

I really need a life... Blush
