I am almost finished 26a by Diana Evans and finding it so-so, don't know if I just don't have the concentration for it at the moment as parts of it seem excellent and other parts don't seem to even register with me. It could be me rather than the book though.

Just being nosey and looking for future recommendations or titles to avoid. Smile

Just finished Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell which I really enjoyed. Am going to read The Time Traveller's Wife next but it takes me a bit of time to get over one book before I can start another.
iykwim!

On Beauty by Zadie Smith which is fab.

Hi everyone,

I don't want to sound "blokey" but I've just finished reading THE WORLD ACCORDING TO CLARKSON by Jeremy Clarkson.

There's not much in it about cars but small chapters about his pet hates with the world and society. Very funny stuff. I love sarcastic humour.

welshmum · 07/04/2006 14:09

Thanks for the Blink recommendations - just finished it, pretty engaging I thought. I've started 'Gilead' now and it's an amazing book, really excellent.

Moondust by Andrw Smith

hellywobs · 04/05/2006 19:45

Suite Francaise by Edith Nemirovsky (prob spelt wrong as it is upstairs and I am too lazy to go and look). Also read Inkheart by Cornelia Funke recently but it did not grab me.

Reading A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian just now and it is absolutely fantastic. I am so glad that it was recommended on MN as I would never have picked it up. I just thought Tractors = boring, even although the blurb on the back makes the book sound interesting and obvious that it's not a book about tractors. Grin

Just started On Beauty by Zadie Smith. Got it for christmas but have only just got round to reading it, it's good so far.

mymama · 05/05/2006 02:03

Salem Falls by Jodie Picoult

saadia · 05/05/2006 07:03

Just finished May Contain Nuts - a satire about over-protective and pushy parents - very funny, saw myself in it.

hannahsaunt · 05/05/2006 10:52

Espresso Tales by Alexander McCall Smith.

Loving it. Very different type of writing (each chapter was originally an article in the Scotsman so a novel written in the manner of eg Dickens though clearly quite different).

Reminds me of home. My real home. Not the home we're going back to in a few weeks.

Is Salem Falls any good? Quite liked the look of it.

babyonboard · 05/05/2006 11:48

black dogs - ian mcewan..
i am loving him at the moment..he is so easily readable but fantastic..
good for reading snatches when baby is napping.

also 'blockbuster' a kind of anthology on hollywood in the past decade.

before that i got 1/3 through 'cloud atlas'..but think it deserves steelier concentration than i can muster at the moment...

ooh perfumeis one of mytop 3 books ever!

the film comes out this year..lord knows how they will adapt it..it relied so heavily on the reader using the descriptive language to build up mental imagery..

it's certainly not the kind of story that would work being 'spoon fed' to it audience hollywood style!?

Anglo Saxon Attitudes by Colin Wilson

singersgirl · 05/05/2006 13:56

"Vernon God Little" by Whatever His Name. Not sure about it.

Recently enjoyed "Arthur and George", "Crake and Oryx" (Margaret Attwood) and "Never Let Me Go" (Kazuo Ishiguro).

joelalie · 05/05/2006 15:55

OK.....I have to admit to complete nerdiness. I'm re-reading the Rama books by Arthur C Clarke. Love science fiction Blush and I think that Rendevous with Rama is the perfect sci-fi story - just the right amount of mystery left at the end.

compo · 05/05/2006 15:56

I've just finished Marian Keyes' latest - not as good as her others imo

dinosaure · 05/05/2006 15:58

I'm reading Fingersmith by Sarah Waters and it's the best thing I've read in yonks.

Bobalina · 05/05/2006 19:58

Hi, never posted on a book thread before but am desperate for a good book - a really good book. I hadn't read a book for years (since having babies) then lurked on the bookclubs threads and bought three that featured heavily: My Sister's Keeper, Lovely Bones and Timetravellers wife. Have read them all (took a while) with differing views: My Sister's Keeper - depressing to the core, Lovely Bones - beautiful and Timetravellers wife - didn't live up to the hype imo.

Can't waste my time on so so books, would love to hear any reccommendations for a fab or "life changing" read, fiction or non-fiction. Thanks.

Bobalina · 05/05/2006 19:59

oh bugger, can you tell I'm new to this lark. wanted to start a new thread and have totally messed it up, apologies, shall try again!!!Grin

tamum · 05/05/2006 21:23

Bobaline, not sure if you did start a new thread, but I thought I would just post here- I recently finished a book by Sally Beauman that I thought was really good. It looks a bit trashy, and I guess I thought her name sounded a bit girly Blush but it was excellent. Landscape of Love, it was called.
