I am almost finished 26a by Diana Evans and finding it so-so, don't know if I just don't have the concentration for it at the moment as parts of it seem excellent and other parts don't seem to even register with me. It could be me rather than the book though.

Just being nosey and looking for future recommendations or titles to avoid. Smile

hannahs aunt - Salem Falls was quite good. I like all Jodi Picoult books though - never tire of the similar themes.

Steppy1 · 06/05/2006 04:53

Married to Albert...... it's by a new author Annie Waller (she's one of the mums at DS's new school !!!) Hilarious....very rude and very funny..... fiction but based on her life as a young military wife (I can't put it down so will probably have finished it by the end of the weekend !)

hannahsaunt · 06/05/2006 08:48

Mymama, thanks for that. I loved My Sister's Keeper - found it utterly compelling esp as dh works in transplant medicine (and only has one kidney). Also enjoyed Perfect Match but found The Pact quite dull. Will look out for Salem Falls next time in the library.

Have just finished River Gods by Wilbur Smith - it was very good as I love Egypt but slowish. I will read the seventh scroll which is the nest one.

edam · 06/05/2006 22:49

Has anyone read Freakonomics? Read it last week in one gulp and really enjoyed it.

chopstix · 06/05/2006 23:16

On the last pages (around 900) of Shantaram by
Gregory David Roberts. Will miss Linbaba & others of Bombay terribly. Excellent read.

beetle73 · 06/05/2006 23:35

Making a bid here for top nerd. I'm reading 'How to read a church'. Not because I'm religious but because churches are cool places and would like to be able to do a bit more than wander in, gaze about, oooh and aaah then leave, feeling like we've 'done' culture.
It's actually very interesting and easy to read. Enjoying it so far.

Thomcat · 06/05/2006 23:42

I'm part of a book club and we are reading Anne Franks Diary and The Virgin Lover by Phillipa Gregory.

UCM · 07/05/2006 00:08

Beetle73, that actualy sounds really interesting?

UCM · 07/05/2006 00:09

actually

Earthymama · 07/05/2006 00:10

joelalie....do try Sheri Tepper as moonlady suggested, she's a fantastic writer. Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell is wonderful, and Meg Roscoff.

I read crime too but spending lots of time with little children has made me incapable of reading anything that threatens a child. As this subject offers writers lots of dramatic tension, it's restricting my options!!

Is anyone going to Hay festival? Some interesting people there and those bookshops Grin

UCM · 07/05/2006 00:11

Dinosaure, I started a thread on this. Isn't is brill. I Love Sugar.....speak to me at the end as I would have loved to discuss it with someone.

tuppenceworth · 07/05/2006 00:15

I've just finished 'A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian' by Marina Lewycka and it was excellent! I picked it up in the library because I thought a book with a title as catchy as that has to be worth a look, and once I started it I couldn't put it down!

Highly recommended!

all4girlz · 07/05/2006 00:20

tuppenceworth · 07/05/2006 00:29

The Number One Ladies Detective Agency

Earthymama · 07/05/2006 00:45

Does everyone take books on holiday? Do you go for latest bestseller, grab something at the airport/service station or plan in advance?

I'm going in Sept and already have the Tractors book to one side in readiness, and Pride and Prejudice (again!!)

tuppenceworth · 07/05/2006 00:49

If there's a book that I know I want to read then I'll wait and take it with me, and I also browse Smiths at the airport for something on a whim, not to mention to buy a stack of magazines that inevitably accompany a long plane ride.

sarahinphuket · 07/05/2006 10:14

I just finished The Constant Gardener and now I'm reading one called Madras on Rainy Days... (or it might be Rainy Days in Madras can't remember!! )

After that I'll be reading one about Tibet called something like The Way of the WHite Clouds. My pile of books to read is now huge!

bakedpotato · 07/05/2006 10:40

Lipstick Jungle, Candace Bushnell
(Don't bother)

saltire · 07/05/2006 11:21

Have just finished the Tractors in the Ukraine (can't remember full title) book and i really didn't enjoy it. It must have been me, my friend said it was hilarious but i never laughed once. before that i read The Kite Runners, which was great. I 've now started The No1 Ladies detective Agency, and am on the 2nd chapter. Enjoying it so far.

Thomcat · 08/05/2006 12:29

It's a Short History of Tractors in the Ukraine. I didn't get it either, it just really didn't do it for me at all, but the majority of my book club really liked it.

eefs · 08/05/2006 12:31

I enjoyed it, it did take a while to get into but I found it very funny and sad at the same time.
I'm reading "Lonesome Dove" at the moment - a western, not my normal style but very well written. I think it won a number of awards actually.

MrsSpoon · 08/05/2006 17:46

I have an Eastern European MIL which I supposed helped my enjoyment of Tractors. I read a few bits out to DH and he had a laugh too as somethings were just so typical of the sort of thing she would say or do.

Started Never Let Me Go and so far it is weird.

Rowlers · 08/05/2006 18:14

Currently reading an Anne Tyler - Breathing lessons I think? Am enjoying it so far but am not absolutely rivetted.
Last books read - Life of Pi (avoided it for ages but must admit to finding it very easy to read and enjoyable) and Every Man for Himself - a Beryl Bainbridge. Very funny but she's not everyone's cup of tea.

nikkie · 08/05/2006 18:59

The pact by Jodi Picoult, really good book one of those have to finish it before I do anyhting else ones Grin
