The republic of love by carol shields

this is my current book club book and i am finding it so hard going! it is so so bad!
have done first two chapters and it's like have teeth pulled.
has anyone read this? does it get any better? at all?

It can't be any worse than one of her other books, Larry's Party.

honestly this si awful- the main character is a folklorist with an interest in mermaids(wtf?)

god knows why if the standard of writing is anything like this.

I found the Stone Diaries by the same author incredibly hard going, didn't like it at all - but nearly everyone else in my book group adored it. you have my sympathies!

have finally finished it!!!hurrah!!!
the second half not as bad as the first , but still not great.
